"Microscope Contents" is the first single to be taken from Kelpe's forthcoming third album for DC Recordings, Cambio Weschel, (which is released on October 12 2009). It begins with the eponymous title track -- an infectious, bass-driven, electro melody which pulses over a constantly evolving percussive groove.

Slugabed 'Dig Up Stupid' is exclusive to this single (it does not appear on the forthcoming album) - a gently grooving electro track replete with warm bass drones that intermittently bubbles with sinister arpeggios that strangely evoke some lost, anxious moment of arcade game tension.

For the fourth and final track Kelpe himself takes album highlight 'The Blankout Agreement' and reworks into a club-weight steppa that rocks its self back and forth from head-nodding groove to floor-smashing anthem, all the while chattering with percussion and subtle melodic inflections...

Kelpe (joined by Chris Walmsley on drums) will be playing selected live dates around Europe to accompany the release of Cambio Weschel. For more info, see http://www.myspace.com/kelpemusic.

Elektronisen musiikin tyylit sulavat manSEDANsen uunissa

Elektronisen musiikin ja kulttuurin festivaalin manSEDANsen iltaohjelmisto on valmis. Ohjelmasta on koottu jälleen ainutlaatuinen ja monisärmäinen kattaus elektronisen musiikin tuoreinta soundia, klassikoita sekä kokeellisempaa tuotantoa.

Klubilla koetaan perjantaina Suomen virkeän dubstep-skenenkin puitteissa iso ilta, kun ulkomaillakin yhä laajempaa huomiota herättävät kotimaiset dj-tuottajat Desto ja Dead-O saavat lavalle seuraa Englannista. Pitkistä ja eri tyyleissä (dubstep, grime, 2step, garage) rönsyilevistä seteistään tunnettu lontoolaiskaksikko Dusk & Blackdown voisivat varmasti hoidella koko illan soiton, mutta suomalaisten lisäksi heidän täytyy tehdä tilaa toisellekin illan brittiläiselle pääesiintyjälle, joka on Appleblim. Myös Appleblim on eri musiikkityylien yhdistäjä. Hänen ylistetyt dj-settinsä, tuotantonsa ja Skull Disco -levy-yhtiönsä tunnetaan muun muassa dubstepin ja teknon vaikutteiden hienoista sekoituksista. Appleblim on osallistunut myös kansainväliseen modernin musiikin workshopiin Red Bull Music Academyyn (RBMA). manSEDANsen ja RBMA:n yhteistyön hedelmänä Appleblim koetaan vihdoin Tampereella.

Lauantai-iltana Klubilla esiintyvät Mike Dred, Global Goon sekä Aleksi Perälä. Kyseessä on kolmikko, joka muodostaa vankan kivijalan legendaariselle Rephlex Records -levy-yhtiölle. Mike Dred (aka. Kosmik Kommando) oli Rephlexin perustajan Richard D. Jamesin (Aphex Twin) jälkeen ensimmäinen Rephlexille levyttänyt artisti. 90-luvun alussa James ja Dred alkoivat tuottaa yhdessä Universal Indicator -nimisten julkaisujen sarjaa, joista tuli acid-genren 90-luvun klassikoita. Parhaillaan Dred valmistelee uuden albumin julkaisua. Uusi levy valmistui Dredin mukaan 8 vuoden ja 8 kuukauden tauon jälkeen, eli levyllä Rolandin rumpukoneklassikko TR-808 lienee taas kovassa käytössä!

Vuonna 1996 Rephlexillä debytoinut Global Goon tunnettiin alun perin hänen omaperäisen soljuvasta ja melodisesta braindancestaan, mutta artistin tuoreimmilla levyillä on ollut kuultavissa selkeä käänne. Viimeisimmät Global Goon -julkaisut ovat TB-303:n jykevöittämää, mutta edelleen persoonallisen melodista acidia. Aleksi Perälä (aka. Ovuca, Astrobotnia) on puolestaan yksi Rephlex Recordsin kuluneen vuosikymmenen tuotteliaimpia artisteja. Hänen tänä vuonna jälleen uudella taiteilijanimellä Boom Blaster julkaisemansa levy ei istu lyhyisiin määritelmiin. Joku voi kuulla tutun perälämäisesti rönsyilevässä Boom Blasterissa minimaaliteknoa, toinen jopa dubstep-rytmiikoita, mutta... Braindancea se on! Lauantaina levyjä pyörittää tietenkin myös pettämätön dj DCOM.

Telakan torstai-ilta on suoraa jatkoa aiemmin päivällä Mediamuseo Rupriikin tiloissa järjestettävälle päivätapahtumalle. Päivällä elektronisen musiikin historiasta luennoiva Petri Kuljuntausta soittaa illalla levyjään. Clouds-duostakin tutun Samuli Tannerin sooloprojekti Ponytail on yksi tämän päivän kiinnostavimmista ja kehutuimmista kotimaisista kokeellisen musiikin projekteista. Päivällä ihmeellisiä itse tekemiään soittimia esittelevä Mika Rintala eli Verde tuo laitteensa illalla Telakan keikalleen.

Sunnuntaina Telakalla esiintyy tamperelaisia elektronisen musiikin kantavia ja myös piileviä voimia, kuten Kompleksi, mmaakkee, Aerodynamystix ja sekä paikallisia dj-kollektiiveja.

Elektronisen kulttuurin historia ja tulevaisuus kohtaavat manSEDANsen päiväohjelmassa

Elektronisen musiikin ja kulttuurin festivaalin manSEDANsen päivätapahtumat laajenevat tänä vuonna koko festivaaliviikon mitalle ja myös sisällön ja kohderyhmiensä osalta. Finlaysonin alueella Mediamuseo Rupriikin tiloissa sijaitseva Vooninkisali täyttyy näyttelyviikon ajaksi installaatioista ja mediataideteoksista, joiden lisäksi tilassa järjestetään monipuolinen elektroniseen kulttuuriin syventyvä seminaarien, luentojen ja työpajojen sarja.

Torstaina (8.10.) kannattaa jokaisen suomalaisesta elektronisesta musiikista ja sen historiasta kiinnostuneen suunnistaa Finlaysonille, kun esillä on ainutlaatuinen paketti alan tietoutta sekä elektronisten soittimien rakentajapioneereja. Aiheesta massiivisen tietopaketin On/Off kirjoittanut Petri Kuljuntausta perehdyttää luennollaan kuulijansa suomalaisen elektronimusiikin historiaan runsaiden ääninäytteiden saattelemana. Luennon jälkeen alkavan Audiohackers Workshopin kunniavieraita ovat Erkki Kurenniemen soittimia esittelevä Mikko Ojanen sekä taiteilijanimellään Verde paremmin tunnettu Mika Rintala.

Suomalaisen elektronisen musiikin pioneeri ja edelleen laajaa kansainvälistä kin kiinnostusta herättävä Erkki Kurenniemi tuli tunnetuksi 60-luvulla soitinrakentajana, elektronimusiikin säveltäjänä sekä avantgardistisena visionäärinä. Helsingin yliopiston musiikkitieteen oppiaineessa opettava Mikko Ojanen esittelee Finlaysonilla Kurenniemen soittimia Dico (1969) ja Dimi-A (1970). Pitkän linjan elektronisten soittimien rakentaja on myös Verde, jonka rakentamat laitteet hämmästyttävät ja viehättävät samalla kertaa. Niiden ääniä on kuultu paitsi miehen omalla yli kymmenellä levyllä, myös esimerkiksi Circlessä, Ektroverdessä ja dokumentissa Futuro. Torstain päiväohjelma täydentyy illalla Telakalla, jossa mm. Verde ja Petri Kuljuntausta (dj) esiintyvät.

Avajaispäivänä tiistaina luennoiva tutkija Kari A. Hintikka tutustuttaa kuulijansa ihmisen ja koneen sekä biologian ja kybernetiikan välisiin suhteisiin 1800-luvulta aina vuoteen 2075. Hintikka havainnollistaa vuorovaikutteiseen taiteeseen keskittyvää luentoaan valokuva-, elokuva- ja videonäyttein alansa keskeisten vaikuttajien teorioista, tuotannosta ja ilmiöistä.

Keskiviikon manSEDANse Play! on omistettu ajankohtaisen pelikehityksen ja
-tutkimuksen esittelyyn. Pelitutkimukseen perehdyttämisestä vastaa tutkija Jaakko Stenroos, jonka jälkeen kokoonnutaan keskustelemaan pelien ja pelaamisen tulevaisuudesta tutkija Olli Sotamaan johdolla. Mukana on myös valtakunnallisesti toimiva pelinkehityskerho Score, jonka toimintaan ja tuottamiin peleihin tutustutaan pelitutkimuksen esittelyn jälkeen.

manSEDANsessa on ohjelmaa myös nuorille, kun yhdessä muusikko Jan Anderzénin, kulttuuriosuuskunta Uulun ja Museopalveluiden TAITE-verkoston kanssa toteutettu yläasteikäisten työpajat perehdyttävät osallistujiaan elektronisen musiikin tuottamiseen. Nuoret tuottavat työpajassa yhdessä oman elektronisen musiikkiäänitteensä. Nämä työpajat on tarkoitettu vain nuorille ja niihin voi osallistua TAITE-verkoston kautta.

Vooninkisalissa on esillä myös useita installaatioita ja mediataideteoksia, joista osassa katsoja vaikuttaa itse teoksen sisältöön. Esimerkiksi kolmen helsinkiläistaiteilijan toteuttama ”Enaktiivinen installaatio” tarjoaa katsojalle tämän ei-tahdonalaisien reaktioiden mukaan muokkautuvan audiovisuaalisen kokemuksen.

Käki kukkui Kim Rapin vongahtaessa ensiparkaisun vanhan Karjalan Vuoksen uoman kelluvassa tuohiveneessä, haukien näykkiessä varpaista mureita irtopaloja tehden niistä torsoisia veistoksia. Rapin menneisyys on muuten purppuraisen usvan peitossa. Laatokan pohjamudista kaivetun päiväkirjan mukaan hän pakeni neuvostovaltaa jäniksenä Saimaan kanavalla kulkeneessa siipiratasaluksessa, kuljettaen Fabergén kultamunia, toista anuksessa ja toista kolmantena pallina, ylittäessään Euroopan pahinta elintasokuilua. Rap päätyi Imatralle v. 1985, jossa hänen onnistui värväytyä kisälliksi paikallisen disc jockeyn ja elektronisen musiikin narkkipojan oppiin.

Suomen armeijan tark’ampujakoulutuksen jälkeen hän liukeni Helsinkiin, jossa aloitti levytysuransa v. 1990. Hän kertoo alkutaipaleella mm. toimineensa merkittävänä vahvistuksena (lähde?) Sähkö Recordingsin kauhua herättäneellä ensimmäisellä Englannin kiertueella. Tämän vuoden Flow-festivaaleilla kuultiin viimeinen Mono Junk -live-keikka Suomessa.

Rapin taiteellista moniulottuneisuutta ja itsensä poikittain pinoon laittamista kuvaa hänen esiintymisensä myös lavasteena barokkiperuukki päässä Turun kaupunginteatterin menestysmusikaalissa Elisabeth sekä Prinsessa Ruususessa. Artikkelit Voima-lehteen ovat liukuportaita kohti esikoiskirjan julkistamista. Kuvataiteilijana Rap on maalannut muutaman tekeleen öljyväreillä, valokuvia näpsinyt paltiarallaa viisi vuotta. Galleria Reginassa nähdään kolmen sarjan valokuvakokonaisuus doupattuna ääni-installaatiolla. Kuvataiteilijana tämä on hänen debyyttinäyttelynsä. Kim Rap on toiminut näyttelyn järjestävässä Monitaito-Projektissa helmikuusta 2009.

The dog days of summer always abound with UFO sightings and other strange phenomena, the hot temperatures obviously creating interesting things in people's brain activity. So, it's only too fitting that there is now this fresh article on the alleged connections between the latest hot pop sensation Lady Gaga (who to me seems merely re-hashing the electroclash craze of the early naughty noughties; in the footsteps of Peaches et al.) and the Illuminati, an ancient secret society supposedly pulling the strings of this world. And this is what the article claims:

The symbolism surrounding Lady Gaga is so blatant that one might wonder if it’s all a sick joke. Illuminati symbolism is becoming so clear that analyses like this one becomes a simple exercise of pointing out the obvious. Her whole persona (whether its an act or not) is a tribute to mind control, where being vacuous, incoherent and absent minded becomes a fashionable thing.

"Shellistä!" Finnish Shell TV commercials of the 1960s and 70s featured the immemorable voiceovers by Kaj Gahnström, in his ultra-masculine growling bass, which used to scare the TV-watching children all over the country. Also the top model Seija Tyni appeared as the "Shell Super Girl" in these stylish clips (created by the advertising agency SEK with Crea-Filmi), which can these days seen as a sort of pop art typical of its era: pre-energy crisis and less "politically correct" (using women as sexist props in commercials, the subsequent boycotts against Shell).

Seija Tyni, as the "Supergirl", soon became associated with Shell as a product personalization, being presented as a modern action character influenced by James Bond and Modesty Blaise, and was seen in different roles in each spot: being a boxer, a soldier, a rally driver, a karate player, etc. In the 1967 Shell sunglasses campaign Tyni's Supergirl appeared as

"a teacher, sitting behind the teacher's desk and looking down at the watch she wears on a chain around her neck. The loud tick-tock of an old grandfather's clock is heard in the background. Then suddenly the school bell rings. The unmistakable, very low bass voice of the narrator [Gahnström] (voice-over was an organic element in Shell Finland's commercials until the 1990s and was imitated in numerous contemporary commercials): 'Suddenly it is 3 p.m. Polarized sunglasses. Now for 12:80. They change your whole world. For a special price. At Shell.' [This sort of "clipped" telegram style was typical of Shell's advertisement lingo. -pH] During the speak, the Supergirl removes her spectacles and puts the sunglasses on. At that same instant her hair falls down and the topknot hairdo changes into a glamorous coiffure. The last scene shows a race car curving away on an icy road."

Paying tribute, Ilppo Pohjola used Gahnström's growling voice (and also some female models fashioned after these old TV commercials) in his experimental short film Asphalto (1998).

Mallisto, founded in Helsinki by Christer Nuutinen (kb/v) and Jukka Vallisto (bg) in the mid-nineties, was active off and on for several years with slightly varying lineups, Nuutinen and Jenni Rope (kb/v) being present in most of the incarnations. Either as a duo or with Vallisto, and later with Ilja Karsikas on guitar.

A year or so of semi-active live playing (at events ranging from ordinary club gigs to art show openings and private house warming parties in tiny student flats) gradually saw the bands output evolve from childish instrumental electro pop to a peculiar lofi sound, mixing synth pop and psychedelia. The only recording to enter the public sphere during Mallisto's active phase was the self-released EP Polku, performed and produced in 2000 by Nuutinen and Rope as a duo.

Quite sadly, as the band continued to further refine its trademark sound — finally matured into their very own specific blend of Lofi Ambient Folk Pop — their active phase also seemed to slowly but firmly grind to a halt. Today, not even the members of Mallisto themselves are sure if the group still exists.

Juhannus 3008 compiles 5 tracks, originally recorded in separate sessions, during a timespan of almost 15 years, but still managing to sum up as one solid body of work.

Here a charming array of old electric pianos, organs and beautiful analog synths are paired with frail lullaby vocals and the occasional hand picked guitar to a most enchanting effect. Melodies — melancholic, warm and inviting — hover mid-air, gently held afloat in the almost invisible, ethereal embrace of buzzing oscillators, reversed tape loops and a strange kind of audible silence. The bands instantly recognisable sound is simultaneously both rich and humble, intimate and spacious.
A remix provided by Erikoismies is also included.

Today is the 75th birthday of Finnish film director Risto Jarva (15 July 1934 - 16 December 1977). You can read more about him here. In many ways Jarva was a product of his own time, whose works reflected the political ideas, social trends, fashions and general Zeitgeist of what was Finland in the 1960s and 1970s, and watching his often-topical films today, they might feel dated and even flawed in many ways, but for me Risto Jarva remains one of the most interesting directors this country has ever spawned, nevertheless.

Blindpassasjer ("Stowaway") was a Norwegian science fiction TV miniseries of three episodes, made in 1978. It was written by Jon Bing and Tor Åge Bringsværd and directed by Stein Roger Bull for NRK, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Egil Monn-Iversen was responsible for the eerie film score. The series, which many consider the finest piece of filmed science fiction in Norway, was also shown in Sweden and Finland (with the title Salamatkustaja). It's interesting how some scenes reminisce Ridley Scott's Alien, which had its film premiere only a year later.

A plot summary from IMBD entry: "The spaceship Marco Polo is returning from a mission at the newly discovered planet Rossum. While the five members of the crew are in deep sleep a mysterious shape is captured on one of the surveillance monitors. Awakened the crew soon discover that one of their number has been killed, and something is living among them in the shape of a crewmate. But who is it?"

Elonkorjaajat Exhibition in Tammisaari

Olli Lyytikäinen: Flygande Hamlet ("Flying Hamlet", 1976)

Elonkorjaajat ("Harvesters") was an artist group who started in Helsinki in 1971. Inspired by the underground movement of the day, the members of Elonkorjaajat featured such people as Pekka Airaksinen, J.O. Mallander and Peter Widén who were also part of The Sperm, a controversial music and performance group. Elonkorjaajat -- whose artistic range encompassed conceptual art, earth art, installations, performance and media art -- ran in Helsinki a gallery called Cheap Thrills (the name inspired by a Frank Zappa record of the same name). Finnish Green movement had its origins in the activities of the vegetarian restaurant Kasvis, run by some Elokorjaajat members who, alongside conceptual art and underground music & culture, embraced such interests as Zen Buddhism and macrobiotic diet.

The works of Elonkorjaajat can now been seen at the summer exhibition (29 May - 13 September 2009) taking place in the Elverket gallery of Tammisaari; featuring Airaksinen, Carolus Enckell, Antero Kare, Philip von Knorring, Mallander, Carl-Erik Ström, Ilkka Juhani Takalo-Eskola, Erik Uddström, Widén and Stuart Wrede. Also Olli Lyytikäinen who died in 1987 is featured with one piece.

McCloud was an American TV show that lasted from 1970 to 1977, starring Dennis Weaver (who many remember from Steven Spielberg's 1971 debut, Duel) as a country marshal transferred to the crime-infested New York City; the basic premises of the series taken from Clint Eastwood's 1968 Coogan's Bluff. 'Ain't That Just The Way' by Barbi Benton (Hugh Hefner's former girlfriend) was heard in the 1975 episode 'Park Avenue Pirates'. Sheriffi McCloud being a popular show in Finland too, Benton's performance in the episode caught the attention of some local music biz people; with the subsequent translation version 'Näinkö meille täällä aina käy' by Virve Rosti becoming a big domestic hit in 1976.

The Old Potato Nose is gone: American actor Karl Malden has died at the honourable age of 97. Malden, born as Mladen George Sekulovich, won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and was also nominated for On The Waterfront (1954), another Marlon Brando movie. Malden was already 60 years old in 1972, when the popular cop show The Streets of San Francisco was launched, lasting five seasons and amassing 119 hour-long episodes where he starred as Lt. Finnish CD-R label Luovaja delighted me with three fresh releases from their roster; two of them of Finnish origins, one from Russia.

Paanpa is the singer–songwriter–multi-instrumentalist Pasi Palonen from Tampere. His home-grown electropop draws comparisons to such Finnish luminaries as Risto and TV-Resistori. Vega Stereo is vintage analogue ambient from the Moscow duo of Alexey and Nastya. Sci-fi–lo-fi–indie-synthesizer-pop-rock from the singer–songwriter–multi-instrumentalist Pasi Palonen's (also of Popsicle People) solo project Paanpa. After last year's wonderful demo Mehujääihmisten uneton uni (which can be downloaded here) comes Paanpa's debut album, philosophical comment on the delicate relationship between man and machine.

Can a machine feel love? Can even a human being feel love? Can a human and a machine ever find each other, romantically? What about an intimate relationship between flesh and cold, cold metal? These are important questions of which no-one has ever written even a doctoral thesis(!).

As a human being, as a machine of flesh, I've been coded with these biological scripts that cause us to feel crush, hate, the need to touch and be touched, the ability to feel sorrow and even so-called love - these are emotions, electrical phenomena going on in the brain, that man has located and given them names. These are the days of making a consumer product from every basic need man has, so that these needs can be sold for example as part of TV's programme flow or as a sex shop's services (not to mention all those dating sites over the Internet).

The world we try to perceive every day is after all created by man. Man has also created every machine and every human being of today. Form is discretion, and there is no soul... So, I make a profound question: Is there really a difference between a creature grown in a womb and a machine, built up piece by piece in a factory? These both creations have (in most cases) some sort of an operating system with some sub programs.

As an individual raised by science fiction literature, I strongly feel the urge to ask, to speculate about the thing called 'reality'. I do not expect getting neutral answers, if any. I also feel that pop music is as good a format to make these questions as a scientific (or a science fiction) publication is.

I have been honoured to feel a machine kind of love, to be a guinea pig for a sadistic dentist's dark fantasies, to mourn my own loneliness, and between all of this I've been conceiving and amending my own views of this planet, Earth.

I recorded this record in my bedroom where I also wrote most of the songs. When Jaakob Karhu contacted me about making this CD-R, about half of the songs existed in a form or another. Quickly I understood what it was going to be, even if my songs tend to take a direction of their own and crawl out of my reach. If I believe in something, it is that things tend to work out somehow - may the results be for good or bad. This happened to 'Ihmisen ja koneen välisestä ystävyydestä', too.

Even though the title of the previous album may have suggested otherwise BQ hasn't split up. There was some hesitation however if the next album should be something different. After working awhile simultaneously with two different tracks BQ soon realised that these two songs were not ment to be together on the same album. Both needed more space and time. The spacier of the two caught more attension because it had the spirit BQ had been searching for; this could be BQ's Atem? So instead of something different you get more of that familiar slow and dark BQ sound you have learned to love. Better luck next time. Maybe.

Eon: 'The Spice Must Flow' (1991)

Ian Loveday a.k.a. Eon, a legendary British electronic dance music producer, passed away on Wednesday June 17 from complications with pneumonia at the age of 54. Loveday was known for such rave tunes as 'Spice' (1990) and 'Fear The Mind Killer' (1991), and the album Void Dweller (1992). He also recorded under such monikers as Minimal Man, Tan Ru and R. Rash. I interviewed Ian Loveday for pHinnWeb in 2002, through his connection with J Saul Kane's Electron Industries label, for which Eon released such 12"s as 'Wave Angel' (1995) and 'Phaze Test' (1996). Rest in peace.

The Chicks have been busy in the last 2 years, filming video, making art installations, Girl Monster extravaganzas, reading books, exhibiting all over the planet, making patchwork fashion collections (for Insight, Crystal Ball and Yoox.com), building high heeled shoe guitars, high tech Super suits that trigger sound and video and other Objekt instruments ... AND THEY EVEN FOUND THE TIME TO MAKE THIS NEW RECORD!

CHICKS ON SPEED’s fifth album Cutting The Edge utilises the collective as a mechanism for the production of instantaneous sound and music recordings. The Chicks worked with: Whomadewho, Mark Stewart, Joe Robinson, A.L. Steiner, Kathi Glas, Anat Ben-David, Christopher Just, Fred Schneider, Gerhardt Potuznik, Patrick Pulsinger and especially UK Super producer team “A Scholar and Physician”.

The studios, where the album was made, included hotel rooms, trains, bathrooms in cellars of art galleries, over Skype and live recordings taken from their Art Rules performances @ MoMA and Centre Pompidou.

The songs range from self-referencing pieces, like “Art Rules” and “Extended Paintbrush”, full of insider information and irony, poking fun at the art world (to encourage people to be courageous and humorous) 60’s bubble gum pop “BUZZ”, which is all about the lost glamour of flying, Fassbinder inspired “Black and White Diva” featuring Kiki Moorse, who departed the group 2 years ago, to persue a solo career. “Sewing Machine” came about after the Chicks found a photo of themselves in El Pais crediting them as being Kraftwerk on stage. “Vibrator” ended up sounding so B52’s-ish that the Chicks just had to call up Fred Schneider. And yes, the recording happened over Skype.

The "Objekt Instruments" are the newest addiction the Chicks on Speed have, they’re the ultimate culmination of fashion, performance and wearable sculptural art, taking advantage of the latest technological developments in science and new media. Most of the songs on the album have been created by using the "Objekt Instruments"; amplified rocks, a high heeled shoe guitar, sax going through a guitar amp, plucking a gutted Piano, and the inspiration for the album title, the scissors.

Matti Inkinen, the vocalist of Finnish electropop band SIG, was found drowned on Monday 25 May, after having disappeared from his home on 29 April 2009. Inkinen, 50, had been recovering from a brain surgery where a tumour was removed, and was allegedly suffering from depression. SIG was at the peak of its popularity in the early 1980s, known for such tunes as 'Tiina menee naimisiin' ("Tiina gets married"), 'Hyvää syntymäpäivää' ("Happy birthday"), 'Sadan vuoden yksinäisyys' ("One hundred years of solitude") and 'Vuosisadan rakkaustarina' ("The love story of the century").

The 12th Erikoisdance CDR offers a long EP length of old material by the labels in-house Outsider Dance super group Die Todesmaschine. Here the notoriously unproductive duo display their trademark style of homegrown synth tracks in 4 examples, along with some versions and remix material — epic Vangelis-on-a-budget strings, off-center basslines obscured by metallic flange, faux 70’s Glam Rock drum patterns and a healthy dose of crunchy tape delay feedback.

The release in fact includes very close to everything they have recorded during the last 6 or so years (except for that one track released under the alias Detox, on the now sadly defunkt Kommando 6 label back in 2004). A remix by Vince Koreman (of Ra-X and Virgin Fang fame), exclusively commissioned for this release, is also included.

British writer J.G. Ballard died on Sunday 19 April 2009. Ballard, who had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer in June 2006, was 78 years old. Among his best-known novels are such as Crash, High-Rise, Empire of the Sun, and Super-Cannes.

Though usually cited as a science fiction writer (he was one of the vanguards of the "New Wave" of sci-fi coming into prominence in the 1960s with such celebrated magazines as New Worlds, which he also contributed), Ballard's main theme was the psychopathology of contemporary society. The writer inspired by French Surrealists of the early 20th century, Ballard's works usually were about the civilisation crumbling but also mutating into something else, creating its own beauty and serenity. His psycho-geographical landscapes were inhabitated by alienated but inquisitive characters obsessed by a combination of technology, celebrity cult, sex and violence; all of which they worshipped with a religious fervour and even some sort of strange dignity.

Crash (1973) is about a small cult of people sexually obsessed with becoming injured or even dying in car accidents, preferably featuring some celebrity figures such as Elizabeth Taylor. Concrete Island (1974) describes a modern-day Robinson Crusoe, who finds himself helplessly stranded on a traffic island in the abyss of a spaghetti junction, his pleas for help ignored by passing cars. As with film director Luis Buñuel, Ballard's works could often be seen as surreal satires of the "discreet charm of bourgeoisie", and High-Rise (1975) shows a group of people consisting of highly-paid professionals and inhabiting an ultra-modern tower block degenerate into a constant life of violent orgy. In The Unlimited Dream Company (1979) an aviator crashes his plane in a suburb town of the Thames Valley, becoming a sort of Messiah with supernatural powers in a tale which might be or not only a final fantasy of a dying man. Ballard's late quadrology Cocaine Nights (1996), Super-Cannes (2000) (these two being actually companion pieces, so similar they are in their themes), Millennium People (2003) and Kingdom Come (2006) also show these same upper-middle class people instigating absurd violence to alleviate the boredom and social friction in their tightly guarded resort communities, business parks and shopping malls.

In a perfect world, the Nobel Award for Literature would have been Ballard's, but science/speculative fiction has never really fitted the appetites of that venerable election committee, not to speak about the controversial nature of his works. It would perhaps be preposterous to call Ballard's works prophetical, but I'm quite sure in the years to come more and more resonance will be found with his works and how the world around us turns out to be. No, as it already is: Ballard's dystopias took place not in some far future or a faraway country, but here and now.

In popular culture, J.G. Ballard has been for years a hip name to throw around and his works have inspired countless other writers, film-makers, artists and musicians. Empire of The Sun, an autobiographical book on Ballard's childhood years in the Japanese-occupied Shanghai, was filmed by Steven Spielberg in 1987. The Crash film version by David Cronenberg (whose earlier works such as Videodrome had a definite Ballardian tone) stirred some controversy in 1996.

Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute Records, recorded in 1978 under the alias of The Normal 'Warm Leatherette', a song based on Ballard's Crash. The Normal's electronic contemporaries such as Gary Numan ('Down In The Park') and John Foxx (Metamatic) have read their Ballard, too. Joy Division's late frontman Ian Curtis took the name for one of their songs, 'The Atrocity Exhibition', from a short story collection of Ballard.

Lately I've been re-listening to A Secret Wish by Propaganda, a German synthpop act, who released the album in 1985 on ZTT Records, the infamous UK "artpop" label of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Art of Noise and Grace Jones fame.

With the Cinemascope-size production by Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn (THE producer guru of the era), the album is a perfect example of the 1980s megalomania as personified by ZTT (short for Zang Tumb Tumb, a name taken from Marinetti's Futurist poem): melodramatic, pseudo-arty, overproduced and quite enchanting.

Exquisitely simple, yet enormously complex, the egg is one of nature's marvels. It is one of the most nutrient dense of foods yet one of the most inexpensive food sources of complete protein available on the planet Earth. What then should we expect
from an egg that hasn't come from Earth but from outer space? Science fiction has attempted to fathom this questions in numerous ways over the years, with often absurd and ridiculous results! In truth it has taken a man from Stafford to realize the true nature of the cosmic egg, and indeed, look no further than its perfect mottled surface, into the abyss that we cannot name, but can in fact listen to...

That man is Andy Meecham, a stalwart of sonic mongering that has travelled a long and deviant road through numerous musical incarnations to get to this point. From the childlike innocence of Bizarre Inc, to the adolescent fury of Chicken Lips, Meecham has passed through these guises and arrived, fully formed at last, as The Emperor Machine. Previous albums Aimee Tallulah Is Hypnotised (2004) and Vertical Tones And Horizontal Noise (2006), as well as more than a dozen singles and countless remixes (from Mark Ronson to Moby, Daft Punk to Franz Ferdinand) have helped refine and smooth his imperial vision, not to mention the numerous live shows all over the world since the inception of the live Emperor Machine last summer. All of this has lead to this moment, his third full-length album, which shall henceforth be known as Space Beyond The Egg.

The Egg itself can be split into many parts. The club takes place in the Bar of the Old Student House (Helsinki) and features a rare performance from the pioneer of Finnish electronic music, Op:l Bastards - who made an impressive return at the 2007 Flow Festival - as well as the retro-tinged, warm synth electro of the duo Villa Nah. DJ Esko Routamaa will be spinning records during the night.

In addition to the live music and the DJ, the IHME Club programme includes a visual dimension in the form of a cross-artistic performance executed by the Association of experimental electronics, who create musical machines from electronic junk and walk the tightrope between chaos and order. The IHME Club programme is designed by the artist Tommi Grönlund, the founder of the record label Sähkö Recordings.

Admission to the IHME Club is free. Tickets are limited - ensure your admission to the club by picking up your tickets beforehand between 30 March and 3 April at the location of Antony Gormley´s Clay and the Collective Body; the Kaisaniemi field, Kaisaniementie street 1-3. Once the IHME Days are underway on Friday, 3 April, tickets can be collected at the information desk of the Old Student House. Two tickets per person.

Higamos Hogamos' 'Infinity Plus One' is the second single taken from the eponymous debut album and crystalizes the band's warped mission - to fuse shimmering glam with motorik groove. The result is a truly mind-bending concoction of space age pop that gets the remix treatments here from two members of the shadowy DC roster...

The Emperor Machine delivers two remixes for this single. The first is an extended version - a disco-fied throbber that has the making of a dancefloor epic with its layers of arpeggiated melodies and uplifting melodic thrusts. This is heavy, orgiastic material that hints at the powerful new material coming from The Emperor Machine in the spring and summer of 2009. The second Emperor Machine remixes halves the BPM and pours on the delay, allowing this one to soak up enough to slink into dubwise territory.

For the the third remix Muscleheads take album track 'The Creeper' and rework it into a sinister dancefloor creation that recalls their now infamous 'Phosphorescence' (as featured on the Death Before Distemper 2 compilation), bringing a haunted edge to the original's decadent swagger.

after telefon tel aviv, it is our pleasure to welcome the next prestigious electronica/ avant-hop duo on bpitch control: agf/delay.

neither antye greie (agf) nor sasu ripatti (vladislav delay / luomo) require much of an introduction. with their various projects, both have long left an indelible imprint on electronic music.

besides two agf albums that appeared on her label of the same name (words are missing and dancefloor drachen), antye greie has produced sool, the fourth album from bpitch front woman ellen allien and has also worked on various multimedia art projects in the past year.

her significant other, sasu ripatti / vladislav delay, also worked on several projects including the release of his fourth luomo album convivial last october, wrote songs with the new york pop band scissor sisters, and played in the moritz von oswald trio alongside moritz von oswald himself.

it has been four years since the two released their first album, explode, on agf productions. symptoms picks up exactly where explode left off: futuristic pop music with singer-songwriter-gestus and tons of depth.

symptoms is agf and delay's musical reality check for a world turned upside-down. woven into a fine net from full beats, dubby textures, and tiny digital sound gimmickry, the twelve songs try to come to terms with the level of awareness and the apparently limited possibilities of mankind's development. an album that is both catchy and challenging.

a symptom is a departure from normal function or feeling. the new agf/delay record is a symptom check on you. a symptom is subjective.

the planet is crying, it is in pain! agf wrote that song on her trip to the synch festival athens in 2006, where it was +41 celsius outside and impossible to leave the hotel. they had those crazy forest fires there, while watching bbc world showing floods over asia and northern america.

"... serial killers get all the attention, bubble gum chaos in high schools" (from the song "congo hearts")

violence is well documented in all media, yet there is a lot of undiscovered and silent violence in bedrooms, backyards and cellars. the human soul seems to be capable of incredible dimensions of cruelty and abuse. where do we humans pull out advice, counsel, directions, instructions, guidelines? from media?

"pop music makes us sick gives us the creeps, perfect war perfect phone absence of lust" (from the song "downtown snow")

commercial music channels create impaired hearing. mobile phones soften bones where the mobile is carried (argument by agf).

" fine prisons to live in, impossible cities to die in, we eat the same shit, we shit the same color" (from the song "outbreak")

the waste we leave behind is not saying if we are asian, african, white, female or gay. "all around we can witness a loss of purpose and meaning, values, and prospects, and an increased isolation from nature - all very self-destructive tendencies." (quote stanislav grof)

"i felt paranoid at reception desks, i felt robbed at security checks" (from the song "symptoms")

agf believes that humans can do better and overcome themselves and the darth vaders of this world, delay is less optimistic (his lyrics show that) but remains open for a change.

Music by Finnish videogame electro act Desert Planet is featured in several scenes of the American short film Get In The Van by Lori Samsel. The 25-minute film is the first live action movie from Samsel, who has previously worked as an animator; being a parody on the exercise videos for women. From the albums Mario Built My Hot Rod (2005) and Turbo Tellytunes (2004) are heard the Desert Planet tunes 'Play Skip Stop', 'Slurp!' and 'Gangster Puzzle'. Also New York's Twilight Electric (of 8-Bit Peoples Net label) is heard in the movie. The DVD of film features as extras four Desert Planet videos and can be ordered from http://www.getinthevan.org/.

The lights are dim, and so are the senses, yet a wanton energy possesses all listeners with a beguiling depravity that will be familiar to anyone who has previously encountered the drooling, degenerate form that is THE EMPEROR MACHINE.

Returning here with two new tracks that expertly smear themselves across the dancefloor, this is the first single in a new series that will precede The Emperor Machine's third album Space Beyond The Egg, due for release on June 1st 2009.

A-side 'Black Ken' is dominated by an ascending melody of warm synthesised tones that recalls tense moments in a 70s discotheque -- sultry, fraught, pulsing, Technicolor! -- a frantic machine workout that stimulates the pelvis whilst intermittently prodding the hypothalamus.

'You Clapper' is by contrast a free-flowing and carefree affair with a pleasingly sordid feel, an orgiastic counterpart to the pent-up thrust of 'Black Ken' that will gently tenderize the brain in a shower of analogical melodies.

Expect a second single in May 2009, followed by the return of The Emperor Machine LIVE, to coincide with the brand new album!

Åke Lindman (1928 - 2009)

Finnish actor and director Åke Lindman has died at the age of 81. Lindman's best-known role is probably as private Lehto in Edwin Laine's war film Tuntematon sotilas ("The Unknown Soldier", 1955). In the 1950s Lindman also played in many other Finnish films, his rough looks often typecasting him in villain roles. Åke Lindman, who was also a professional footplayer in his youth, later became a film and TV director.

Kompleksi sai alkunsa duona vuonna 2002. Perustajajäsenet Mike Not (koskettimet, miksaaminen ja tuottaminen) ja pHinn (vokaalit ja koskettimet) ovat kumpikin tehneet aikaisemmin omilla tahoillaan työtä Tampereen ja Suomen tekno-, elektro- ja underground-skenessä, Mike Not oman Noise Production -sooloprojektinsa parissa ja DJ:nä, pHinn suomalaista konemusiikkia käsittelevän verkkosivusto pHinnWeb.org:in ylläpitäjänä ja musiikkikirjoittajana, DJ:nä ja yhtenä Tampereen Club Telex -elektrotapahtuman taustavoimana. Mike Not on toiminut äänittäjänä, tuottajana ja teknisenä taustatukena niin tekno-, hip hop- kuin goottirock-projekteissakin. Suurinta listamenestystä takavuosina saavutti Nuera Possen hip hop -artisti Petri Nygård, jonka äänityksiä Mike Not oli mukana luotsaamassa.

Kompleksin kolmas jäsen Everhad (läppäri, miksaus, vocoder/taustalaulu, koskettimet) liittyi mukaan vuonna 2008. Everhadilla on vankka tausta kitaristina punkbändeissä kuten Entropia ja AVK sekä omissa, maanalaista kulttimainetta saavuttaneissa, IDM:ää ja nyrjähtäneempääkin ilmaisua edustaneissa elektronisissa projekteissaan kuten Ever Had, Melkoinen ja Kings of Kaivinkone. Everhadin tuotantoa kuullaan Kompleksin tulevilla raidoilla.

Kompleksin ensimmäinen oma julkaisu oli 7" single '(I Ain't No) Lovechild'/'Moscow 1980' Lal Lal Lal -levymerkillä. Sen ohella Kompleksin raitoja on kuultu kokoelmalevyillä, joita ovat julkaisseet legendaarinen hollantilainen elektrolevymerkki Bunker Records sekä Manchesterin Mate Recordings, ja Kompleksin raitoja ovat ehtineet suitsuttaa maineikkaat kansainväliset elektroartistit kuten Legowelt ja Luke Eargoggle. Kompleksin ensimmäinen albumi Sister Longlegs Dances In The Disco julkaistiin 500 kappaleen rajoitettuna vinyylipainoksena lokakuussa 2008 helsinkiläisellä Verdura Recordsilla. Albumi - jolla tuottajakumppaneina ovat Polytron, Unidentified Sound Objects ja Citizen Omega - sai Soundin levyarvostelussa neljä tähteä viidestä.

Kompleksi kuvaa rosoista ja kotikutoista musiikkiaan nimellä "eklektro" eli eklektinen elektro, joka ottaa vaikutteita niin 70- ja 80-luvun taitteen synapop-artisteista kuin uudemmasta elektrosta, teknosta, diskosta ja kokeellisemmasta ilmaisusta, unohtamatta psykedelia-, punk-, uusi aalto- ja dub-vaikutteitakaan: tuloksena taatusti outoa, mutta rullaavaa konesoundia.

YouTubessa voi käydä katsomassa aikaisempien keikkataltiointien ohella Kompleksin ensimmäisen musiikkivideon 'Sara Pain', jonka ohjasi vuonna 2007 australialainen Tina Ulevik. Mainitun biisin ohella kulttisuosikeiksi ovat muodostuneet synapop-henkinen 'Moscow 1980' ja tekijöiden kotikaupungille omistettu 'Porno Tampere', jotka molemmat on tehty yhteistyössä Rikos Recordsille levyttäneen Polytronin kanssa. 'Spiders In The Sky' edustaa glitch-henkistä mutanttidiskoa ja vaasalaisen Citizen Omegan kanssa tehty 'Bioluminescence' liippaa Detroit-elektron suuntaan. Uudemmista kappaleista 'Battlestar Erotica' yhdistelee 80-luvun alun homodiskosoundia jyrääviin EBM-henkisiin rytmeihin.

On first glance Lucio Capece and Mika Vainio seem unlikely partners. Two standard bearers at opposing poles of extremity, both sonically and geographically. Lucio from Argentina and rooted in a traditions of jazz and Improv, while Mika hailing from Finland sourced in early 90s electronic and Industrial scenes.

However, they both share an alarming attention to detail when it comes to their audio compositions, and neither are afraid of pushing boundaries of abstraction to the limit. With this in mind its with great pleasure that Editions Mego issues their first album as a duo. Recorded over a 2 year period in Berlin (their common chosen home), its as startling as it is visceral. Delicate as it is extreme. Huge blasting slabs of concrete sax geometrically oppose sonic taps of electronic sound, which bring about a fascinating sound palette.

The opening ‘Ujellus’ is both piercing and soothing; ‘Juurake’ combines pure sweat with cold emotion; tense environmental scrapes flesh out on ‘Ahuyenta Temores’. From the pounding machinist overdrive on ‘ Tolmavuo’ to the poignant melancholy of ‘Mañana’.

The Designers Republic, an influential and often imitated graphic design studio of Sheffield, England, has closed down in January. tDR was among all known for the record sleeve designs for Warp Records, also based in Sheffield, that were there to define the look for the early-1990s electronic music subculture. I just answered this meme that has been making rounds at Facebook, and for purely narcissistic reasons, I guess, I reprint it also here.

1. I was born in Lapua in the Southern Ostrobothnian province in Finland and have lived in Tampere since I was one year old.

2. My birthday is the 26th of July; the same as that of Carl Gustav Jung, Aldous Huxley, Stanley Kubrick and Mick Jagger...

3. I'm supposedly related on father's side to Antti Rannanjärvi, one of the Ostrobothnian "häjys", notorious knife-wielding rogues terrorizing that rural area in the 19th century.

4. On mother's side, Essi Wuorela of Rajaton accapella group is something like a second or third cousin to me.

5. I am lefthanded.

6. The colour of my eyes is something like in between green, brown and gray; probably green being the most dominant.

7. My favourite colour is blue. (Sorry, this sort of trivia is so boring and teen-mag, but I'm having trouble filling in all 25 points.)

6. When I was child, my future dream professions would be, in their respective turns: a policeman, an astronaut or an archeologist. All inspired by TV or popular culture, of course.

7. When I was a child, I was often thinking about ontological questions and wondered if reality, as I perceived it, would only exist for me and no-one else; and if actually the "real" world (which I couldn't see myself) would be that of green and red amoebas, for example. Later on, I found out also other children have had similar ideas. Very Philip K. Dick, I guess.

8. I was also a little bookworm, carrying all the time loads of books from a local library to home, just devouring every piece of information I could.

9. Though I got through the basic school system OK, from primary school to high school (only dropped out after wasting nearly a decade in the cogs of academia), during my childhood and adolescence I learned to grow a certain dislike towards educational systems. Probably on my path of learning there were just too many little tyrants, hysterical people and small-scale psychopaths calling themselves teachers (though naturally also some likeable characters). I preferred self-learning and still do.

10. I used draw comics in my childhood and teens, but probably my enthusiasm waned when I received some flak about them, being in such a tender age. Now I think it was foolish and I have regretted many times afterwards that I stopped honing my skills as an illustrator.

11. I also dreamt of becoming a film director when I was a teenager, but apparently my dreams and reality weren't interchangeable. I went to movies several times a week, was a member of film clubs, subscribed to film magazines and generally read everything about the history and present day of cinema, and so on.

12. I've actually never had a chance to travel any further south than Sweden and Denmark, those being as far abroad I ever was. I guess it has always been the lack of money, suitable travelling companions and so on.

13. Before I became pHinn, I used to work in a local comics shop, some people I still associate with learning to know me from behind its desk.

14. After that experience came to its end, gradually my enthusiasm for comic books and wasting most of my money on them was replaced by that for music and wasting most of my money on records.

15. I started in 1996 the Website that became in time pHinnWeb.org, probably being the reason most of people have heard about me in the first place.

16. My original DJ name was Nemo (after another childhood hero of mine, Captain Nemo of Jules Verne) but after receiving a dismayed mail from a person in Helsinki also calling himself DJ Nemo, I decided to rechristen myself as DJ pHinn, after my Website. I haven't heard about the other DJ Nemo or his activities ever since.

17. As a DJ, I never really became technically proficient in such things as beatmatching, not owning my own set of SL-1200s, but some people seemed to like my selections anyway.

18. After the mid-2000s my career as a DJ seemed to wane gradually, for various reasons, so I thought just concentrating on creating our own music was a better option to spinning that of the others. If provoked hard enough, I might still do a DJ set some time, but don't expect the latest flashing, banging, hippest, trendiest sounds from me then. I lived that life through already and I'm not going back.

19. I am very much into DIY and "Outsider Art". I think being a virtuoso or an expert of your craft doesn't hurt, but when one has an urge to express, one shouldn't be hindered by the formal lack of skills or education. Of course, "dilettantism" is always frowned upon by the gatekeepers of culture worrying about their carefully secured positions, but it's important to keep creating, even if it was only for your own personal entertainment and no-one else's.

20. The City tabloid of Tampere elected in 2001 me as "The Best Underground Man in Town". That was quite exhilarating and funny, when you start to think about it.

21. Both my father and grandfather died in 2007. Kompleksi's first album is dedicated to them.

22. Though never having had any problems with alcohol, I decided to quit drinking altogether after June 2008. I haven't regretted a day. I think I generally feel better, have less negative thoughts to shadow my mind, and I'm a nicer (if more quiet) person when I'm sober, less prone to "clever" remarks and boasting, even though I can't hide behind that shelter of false confidence any more.

23. I don't really know why I answered this query. Perhaps because I'm a sucker.

24. Using any standard economic yardstick and also considering from some social points of view, I might well be called "marginalized", but I've stayed out of the gutter so far and some things seem to be actually advancing in my life, so I guess there's still hope.

25. I think I've got a guardian angel. Or more precisely, along my path there have been many of them.

1. What are you listening to right now?

This week Isaac Hayes, Björk, Nick Cave and some Brazilian compilation. Next week something else.

2. As a teenager, what was a band you were ashamed to admit to liking?

Not a band but a solo artist: Prince. Because my AC/DC-worshipping classmates thought he was gay and kept picking me about my adoration of his music.

3. And today?

Nothing, really. My tastes are pretty eclectic and I can listen to anything, though I have no time for Top 40 myself.

4. Have you met an artist you admired? How did it go?

Sure, several of them, some of them in real life, even more only through E-mail, but I think it's better to keep my lips sealed about those encounters. More and more, I try to live by the rule of thumb: "Never meet your idols, they're bound to let you down". If I'm a fan of a certain artist, I don't want to meet him/her, because I'm always afraid s/he will turn out to be an a**hole, and I couldn't listen to his/her music again. Artists with their egos, tantrums and constant insecurities... try not to tread on the tiger's tail. (Well, to make it clear, I don't have as my FB friends any artists who I would really have a problem with - if you think it's YOU I'm talking about here ;) Of course, I've met many nice ones, too. Circle's Jussi Lehtisalo is always my prime example of a Really Nice Person Who Also Happens To Be A Musician.

5. Have you had dreams about bands or artists? What happened?

I once had a dream where I shook hands with Iggy Pop at a gig.

6. What was your first gig?

Can't remember.

7. Which living artist you still haven't seen, but desperately want to?

No-one, really. I don't really want to see my old heros who are still alive and past their prime, and I'm not any more into doing pilgrimages to worship some idol.

8. Who or what band would you like to resurrect and see live?

No-one, but I am just reading "White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s", the memoirs of producer Joe Boyd, responsible for the first single of Floyd, and inspired by Boyd's vivid recollections, I thought it would be nice to have a time machine and travel back to check the Syd Barrett-era (1966-67) pre-dinosaur Pink Floyd at UFO club of London.

9. Which riff would you like to learn to play or sing 'just right'?

Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major.

10. How many records do you own, or how many songs do you have in your itunes/mp2 player?

Haven't really counted, but my approximation is somewhere in between 1000 and 2000. I've always received flak from certain family members about my hobby of music and wasting money on records, so it's always a guilty pleasure. I don't own any of these fancy iTunes/MP2/whatever players and don't do filesharing or download music. The music department of Metso, Tampere's main library, is enough to fulfil my free music needs.
