Free entry! Kompleksi's first gig in Tampere!

Kompleksi sai alkunsa duona vuonna 2002. Suurinta listamenestystä takavuosina saavutti Nuera Possen hip hop -artisti Petri Nygård, jonka äänityksiä Mike Not oli mukana luotsaamassa.

Kompleksin kolmas jäsen Everhad (läppäri, miksaus, vocoder/taustalaulu, koskettimet) liittyi mukaan vuonna 2008. Everhadilla on vankka tausta kitaristina punkbändeissä kuten Entropia ja AVK sekä omissa, maanalaista kulttimainetta saavuttaneissa, IDM:ää ja nyrjähtäneempääkin ilmaisua edustaneissa elektronisissa projekteissaan kuten Ever Had, Melkoinen ja Kings of Kaivinkone. Everhadin tuotantoa kuullaan Kompleksin tulevilla raidoilla.

Kompleksin ensimmäinen oma julkaisu oli 7" single '(I Ain't No) Lovechild'/'Moscow 1980' Lal Lal Lal -levymerkillä. Sen ohella Kompleksin raitoja on kuultu kokoelmalevyillä, joita ovat julkaisseet legendaarinen hollantilainen elektrolevymerkki Bunker Records sekä Manchesterin Mate Recordings, ja Kompleksin raitoja ovat ehtineet suitsuttaa maineikkaat kansainväliset elektroartistit kuten Legowelt ja Luke Eargoggle. Kompleksin ensimmäinen albumi Sister Longlegs Dances In The Disco julkaistiin 500 kappaleen rajoitettuna vinyylipainoksena lokakuussa 2008 helsinkiläisellä Verdura Recordsilla.

'Spiders In The Sky' edustaa glitch-henkistä mutanttidiskoa ja vaasalaisen Citizen Omegan kanssa tehty 'Bioluminescence' liippaa Detroit-elektron suuntaan. Uudemmista kappaleista 'Battlestar Erotica' yhdistelee 80-luvun alun homodiskosoundia jyrääviin EBM-henkisiin rytmeihin.

Kompleksin keikka Bar Bulldogissa on trion ensiesiintyminen omassa kotikaupungissaan kahden menestyksekkään Helsingin-konsertin jälkeen.

Vaihe ¼ (@ Klubi, Tampere, 16 January 2009)

MARry presents:
Vaihe ¼
@ Klubi, Tampere
Friday 16 January 2009
9 pm - 4 am
age limit 18
tickets 6 €

live:

Sami Koivikko (Spectral Sound, Shitkatapult)
RRKK (Katusea)

DJs:

SSSOOOIII
Sire (Step Ahead)
Nilk

Vaihe ¼ Tullikamarin Klubilla 16. tammikuuta
tiedote 08.01.2009
julkaisuvapaa: heti

Dj Nilk puolestaan tarjoilee kahdella lautasella gourmet-aterian minimaaliteknoa.

Vaihe ¼ on nimensä mukaisesti osa useamman tapahtuman sarjaa. Klubin järjestää elektronista musiikkia ja kulttuuria edistävä yhdistys MARry, joka on ilahduttanut musiikinystäviä muun muassa kolme kertaa järjestämällään manSEDANse-festivaalilla.

Life Moving Too Fast For pHinnWeb (At Least, For Now)

My life seems to be in transition now, so I just don't have as much time and energy for pHinnWeb or the "scene" as I used to have. (Don't ask, a lot of it is not a bunch of fun and relates to things post my father's death, but I also started at a new job now.) Anyway, I still try to do some updates when I can. For example, Sakke Karipuro announces that his pics from MARry (the people who brought you manSEDANse) Festival are now online at:

"Arenas For Experimental Music In Finland"

"There are more events for experimental music in Finland than ever before. The majority of clubs are in Helsinki, but there is an active scene in other major cities too. Despite facing financial hardship, the organizers are contagiously enthusiastic."

    Tiedote
    Vapaa julkaistavaksi

SUOMIELEKTRON SUPERYHTYE OP:L BASTARDS JYVÄSKYLÄÄN 29.9.

Jyväskyläläisiä hemmotellaan la 29. syyskuuta kun juuri comebackinsä tehnyt Op:l Bastards -elektroyhtye saapuu keikalle NS.Klubille Ilokiveen.

1990-luvun puolivälissä perustetun Op:l Bastardsin ura kulminoitui The Job -albumin julkaisuun vuonna 2001.

Op:l-miehet eivät jääneet lepäämään laakereilleen, vaan panostivat muihin bändeihinsä, joiden lista on vakuuttava: And The Lefthanded, Uusi Fantasia, Motiivi:Tuntematon ja Kaukolampi, Puranen, Nykänen.

    manSEDANse 2007: 4-7 October '07, Tampere

    manSEDANse 2007
A festival of electronic music & arts
    Tampere, Finland
    4-7 October 2007
    @ Telakka & Klubi

    manSEDANse @ MySpace

    From press release:

"manSEDANse convenes electronic communities to Tampere

manSEDANse festival takes place in October with themes of electronic music, art and community-driven content.

The most interesting and intriguing movers and shakers in electronic music are convened to Tampere in the first week of October 2007 by manSEDANse festival. manSEDANse, flying high on full throttle for the second time now, will be presenting the cream of electronic music to brighten the dark Nordic nights with very exciting line-ups. The festival programme will also feature workshops, film screenings and a seminar.

manSEDANse's programme will certainly satisfy many patrons of electronic music and culture. At this point we will give you but a hint: The headliners on Saturday night all hail from Manchester."

    About:

"manSEDANse is organised by MadAssRevir ry, a non-profit organization based in Tampere. The mission of MARry is to promote electronic music and culture in Finland.

The roots of manSEDANse festival date back to year 2000 when an underground rave by the name SEDAN 2000 was held at a Tamperean penthouse. After the enthusiastic welcome the underground penthouse turned into a popular club venue and SEDAN 2001 knocked the socks off Tampere clubbers with its cutting edge artists and GIGANTIC visual treats. Simply undescribable.

A series of recurring clubs, such as Comet, Slavic Walkmen, Underground Disco and the New Year Mash-up raves were organised at Klubi between 2002-2005.

The very first manSEDANse festival was organised in 2005. The festival teamed up the original SEDAN line-up with a merry bunch from around Europe: Subjex, Sickboy, Schizoide, Regina, Verde and Pylon among many others. It introduced Tampere to something that was lacking in the Finnish cultural climate: a full-fledged four-day festival of electronic music.

In 2006 MARry was raving to retro tunes with the ultimate glance to the past party, Shake That Acid! manSEDANse also provided the official festival dj's to the Tampere International Film Festival 2007. That was fun!

That's the history. manSEDANse 2007 will be the biggest, boldest and meanest festival in Finland ever. Simply undescribable. Yet again."

Bass & Beer Party, Friday 30 March 2007, Tampere

    Bass & Beer Party
    Friday 30 March 2007
@ Club Apple, Aleksanterinkatu 29 (upstairs of Café Europa), Tampere
    free entry

Dubsteppers, minimal dub, dub, even more dub

    DJs:
    Mesa-Vatti & Miska Immanuel (Vaasa)
    Jere P
    Nilk (Bass & Beer)

Bass & Beer Party has been one of the few remaining torch-bearers of electro in Tampere, including in their nights also other styles of electronic dance music, such as drum'n'bass, dubstep and hip hop.

From the introduction on Bass & Beer Party MySpace site:

"Bass & Beer got started when Squash and Bob Ryynänen wanted to organize club where people could see proper lives supported by great DJs. Jere P soon came along as well. After about one year of some parties with various names, 11 September 2004 saw the first official Bass & Beer Party in Telakka, Tampere. Since then, there has been many memorable nights with lives like Huoratron, Dos Noun, Polytron and Blamstrain and some bad ass DJ action by Rikos Records collective, Resound, Sire and Kongocrew among others. When it comes to the residents, Jere P has mainly been playing the lousy slots, driving cars and arranging some women for the afterparties, as Squash and Bob have been doing the organizing and playing the better slots. It must be said that when the afterparties have occurred, it has been Jere to take care of the gals. In the winter of 2006 Bass & Beer did a little tour in Finland, co-operating for example with Ikahu posse from Lahti. 2006 also witnessed birth of Tammerforce club, the fruit of B&B's co-project with legendary Telex.

Always struggling but still there, Bass & Beer for your entertainment."

    Swaeg: Sounds From Tampere Underground

Swaeg is an audiovisual collective working on non-profit basis and organising clubs here in Tampere, and at their parties you can hear some of most twisted brands of underground electronic dance music from IDM/electronic listening music to break-noise-death-whatever-core (à la the notorious British freak label V/VM) to dubstep; the Swaeggers themselves describing their sound as "idm - waltz - breakcore - medley - mash up - mortar rave - worst case scenario - neurodrunk".

Mostly headed by Joonas Toivonen (b. 1981), who also creates his own hilariously demented music under the moniker Toiminto ("Function"), Swaeg has organised over 40 parties (where yours truly has also DJed a couple of times) and a few festivals (among all Australia's Casionova and Lappland's old-school computer game sound monsters Desert Planet have been heard in these) since June 2004; also promoting visual art in the form of flyers, posters and videos -- summer 2006 saw an exhibition of Swaeg art at Tampere's Huoltamo mini-gallery.

Alongside these activities, the Swaeg posse is responsible for some Net-only music releases, including SWG001 (an MP3 compilation of Finnish electronic music, featuring such artists as Blamstrain, Roger That Jr, Oreia, Videovalvontaa, Toiminto, etc.), Demonic 1's "Die!" EP (dubstep from Tampere, SWG002), Waisted Flanders' "Lost" EP ("bass-boosted lo-fi whatstep", SWG003), and "Esoteris" EP by P2 ("psy-idm-arcade-jazz-darkambient-breakcore", SWG004). Joonas Toivonen has also promised his own dubstepish longplay should be out under Swaeg soon.

    Electronic Music Films

I was recently asked if I knew any documentary films that would shed more light on the history and beginnings of electronic music. I did some searches, and subsequently found out that most of those documentaries in existence (well, at least those listed at Internet) concentrate mostly on the latest developments in electronic music, or to be more precise, electronic dance music and rave culture.

The early history of electronic music (before 1960s, an area mostly populated by academic/avantgarde composers and inventors of electronic instruments) seems to be only sporadically (or as footnotes) featured in most existing documentaries, bar perhaps Steven M. Martin's 1994 feature on León Theremin or even Mika Taanila's 2002 Future Is Not What It Used To Be on Finnish electronic instrument inventor Erkki Kurenniemi; not forgetting the films dedicated to Robert Moog or Bruce Haack. If you know of any other related documentary films, please let me know.

    Dubstep in Tampere

Tammerforce/Bass and Beer Party club's Dubstep special last night at Yo-Talo presented Tes La Rok (a.k.a. Jani Niiranen from Helsinki) featuring MC Rogue Star from London. I checked this with some interest because I couldn't claim to have much idea what this dubstep thing -- supposedly the latest craze in UK's electronic dance music -- was all about.

Well, it turned out to be pretty intriguing: very growling and slow bone-shaking sub-bass sounds accompanied with abstract electronic excursions circling from one speaker to another. In fact, one could say it sounded much like a jungle 45 rpm vinyl record played at death-slow 33 rpm instead. So the tempo was that of dub reggae but the aggressive heaviness -- in fact, downright scary at times -- was clearly from those darker styles of drum'n'bass.

This sound made me somehow think of my old favourites Meat Beat Manifesto, Techno Animal (Kevin "The Bug" Martin's project with Justin Broadrick of Godflesh) or even one my all-time fave tracks, LFO's 'Tied-Up' (albeit as a slowed-down version). So I have to say I quite liked the dubstep sound: nice, dark and hard. (Heh, a comparison for the more rock-oriented people might be of grunge's slower Black Sabbath-like sounds to that of speed metal.)

The only problem with the performance for me was that maybe the BPM/tempo there remained a bit too same-y all through the set; for my own tastes accelerating the tempo and adding more rhythmical variation every once in a while might have probably made it more interesting, but perhaps this would have also lost the idea of what this style is all about. And perhaps it might have been interesting to hear it all as purely instrumental without the Cockney chants from this Brit MC who did his best, though, to lift the audience's emotions and even trying to make them raise their cigarette lighters for Tes La Rok (as they do at UK parties to show appreciation for the DJ; it seems Finnish audiences have not adopted this habit, at least not yet). After the set, Bass and Beer head honcho Bob Ryynänen played some cool electro, the way we haven't heard in ages in this Northern Mecca of milk-white junglists, Morrissey-worshippers and forest folkers; even causing one ol' pHinn to do some rare body movements on dancefloor; a considerable feat in itself these days.
