Kompleksi sai alkunsa duona vuonna 2002. Perustajajäsenet Mike Not (koskettimet, miksaaminen ja tuottaminen) ja pHinn (vokaalit ja koskettimet) ovat kumpikin tehneet aikaisemmin omilla tahoillaan työtä Tampereen ja Suomen tekno-, elektro- ja underground-skenessä, Mike Not oman Noise Production -sooloprojektinsa parissa ja DJ:nä, pHinn suomalaista konemusiikkia käsittelevän verkkosivusto pHinnWeb.org:in ylläpitäjänä ja musiikkikirjoittajana, DJ:nä ja yhtenä Tampereen Club Telex -elektrotapahtuman taustavoimana. Mike Not on toiminut äänittäjänä, tuottajana ja teknisenä taustatukena niin tekno-, hip hop- kuin goottirock-projekteissakin. Suurinta listamenestystä takavuosina saavutti Nuera Possen hip hop -artisti Petri Nygård, jonka äänityksiä Mike Not oli mukana luotsaamassa.

Kompleksin kolmas jäsen Everhad (läppäri, miksaus, vocoder/taustalaulu, koskettimet) liittyi mukaan vuonna 2008. Everhadilla on vankka tausta kitaristina punkbändeissä kuten Entropia ja AVK sekä omissa, maanalaista kulttimainetta saavuttaneissa, IDM:ää ja nyrjähtäneempääkin ilmaisua edustaneissa elektronisissa projekteissaan kuten Ever Had, Melkoinen ja Kings of Kaivinkone. Everhadin tuotantoa kuullaan Kompleksin tulevilla raidoilla.

Kompleksin ensimmäinen oma julkaisu oli 7" single '(I Ain't No) Lovechild'/'Moscow 1980' Lal Lal Lal -levymerkillä. Sen ohella Kompleksin raitoja on kuultu kokoelmalevyillä, joita ovat julkaisseet legendaarinen hollantilainen elektrolevymerkki Bunker Records sekä Manchesterin Mate Recordings, ja Kompleksin raitoja ovat ehtineet suitsuttaa maineikkaat kansainväliset elektroartistit kuten Legowelt ja Luke Eargoggle. Kompleksin ensimmäinen albumi Sister Longlegs Dances In The Disco julkaistiin 500 kappaleen rajoitettuna vinyylipainoksena lokakuussa 2008 helsinkiläisellä Verdura Recordsilla. Albumi - jolla tuottajakumppaneina ovat Polytron, Unidentified Sound Objects ja Citizen Omega - sai Soundin levyarvostelussa neljä tähteä viidestä.

Kompleksi kuvaa rosoista ja kotikutoista musiikkiaan nimellä "eklektro" eli eklektinen elektro, joka ottaa vaikutteita niin 70- ja 80-luvun taitteen synapop-artisteista kuin uudemmasta elektrosta, teknosta, diskosta ja kokeellisemmasta ilmaisusta, unohtamatta psykedelia-, punk-, uusi aalto- ja dub-vaikutteitakaan: tuloksena taatusti outoa, mutta rullaavaa konesoundia.

YouTubessa voi käydä katsomassa aikaisempien keikkataltiointien ohella Kompleksin ensimmäisen musiikkivideon 'Sara Pain', jonka ohjasi vuonna 2007 australialainen Tina Ulevik. Mainitun biisin ohella kulttisuosikeiksi ovat muodostuneet synapop-henkinen 'Moscow 1980' ja tekijöiden kotikaupungille omistettu 'Porno Tampere', jotka molemmat on tehty yhteistyössä Rikos Recordsille levyttäneen Polytronin kanssa. 'Spiders In The Sky' edustaa glitch-henkistä mutanttidiskoa ja vaasalaisen Citizen Omegan kanssa tehty 'Bioluminescence' liippaa Detroit-elektron suuntaan. Uudemmista kappaleista 'Battlestar Erotica' yhdistelee 80-luvun alun homodiskosoundia jyrääviin EBM-henkisiin rytmeihin.

Kompleksin keikka Bar Bulldogissa on trion ensiesiintyminen omassa kotikaupungissaan kahden menestyksekkään Helsingin-konsertin jälkeen.

Vaihe ¼ sukeltaa elektronisen dubin ja teknon syvyyksiin

Vaihe ¼ on perjantaina 16. tammikuuta järjestettävä elektronisen musiikin klubi, jonka live-esiintyjät Sami Koivikko ja RRKK kuljettavat illan soinnin minimaalisen teknon ja dub-vaikutteiden taajuuksiin.

Tapahtuman dj:t SSSOOOIII, Sire ja Nilk laajentavat kuvaa kukin taholleen. Dj SSSOOOIII on aiemmin muillakin nimillä tunnettu pitkän linjan suomalainen dj-taituri, joka on palannut vuosien jälkeen uudella soundillaan. Odotettavissa on ilmeisen monipuolinen setti, joka todella kannattaa todistaa paikan päällä.

Pitkä on ollut dj Sirenkin linja elektronisen musiikin parissa, mutta viime vuosina hän on tullut tutuksi varsinkin laadukkaan dubstepin ystäville. Dj Nilk puolestaan tarjoilee kahdella lautasella gourmet-aterian minimaaliteknoa.

Vaihe ¼ on nimensä mukaisesti osa useamman tapahtuman sarjaa. Klubin järjestää elektronista musiikkia ja kulttuuria edistävä yhdistys MARry, joka on ilahduttanut musiikinystäviä muun muassa kolme kertaa järjestämällään manSEDANse-festivaalilla.

"manSEDANse is organised by MadAssRevir ry, a non-profit organization based in Tampere. The mission of MARry is to promote electronic music and culture in Finland.

The roots of manSEDANse festival date back to year 2000 when an underground rave by the name SEDAN 2000 was held at a Tamperean penthouse. After the enthusiastic welcome the underground penthouse turned into a popular club venue and SEDAN 2001 knocked the socks off Tampere clubbers with its cutting edge artists and GIGANTIC visual treats. Simply undescribable.

A series of recurring clubs, such as Comet, Slavic Walkmen, Underground Disco and the New Year Mash-up raves were organised at Klubi between 2002-2005.

The very first manSEDANse festival was organised in 2005. pHinn, The Best DJ In Tampere???

I was truly awestruck this morning when I opened the Valo weekend supplement of local Aamulehti newspaper. They had decided to choose "The Best Three" from various areas of culture (80s heavy metal singers included) here in Tampere and around the world. I thought someone had dropped some hallucinogen to my morning coffee without my knowing, when I browsed the article and my eyes ended up in this little part there...

You see, there was also a section "Tiskijukat" ("disc jockeys"), and as the three best DJs they had chosen as number three Sami Koivikko (a local minimal house man, who has released an album for Berlin's Shitkatapult, and done tons of gigs in Europe and Russia); the second place justifiedly belonged to DJ Infekto (a.k.a. Riku Pentti), the real workhorse of Tampere's drum'n'bass/breakbeat scene, another DJ with countless gigs around the world and a recording artist too. Also familiar from The Skillsters and Bomfunk MCs.

And here's the strangest thing: in the first place there was one pHinn, whom they described with the words: "The underground man Erkki Rautio prefers kommandomixing in the punk spirit to technical superiority. A good gig comes about with some personal ideas and a large record collection." Wheeeeeeew. I'm speechless.

(Well, the funny thing really is that I haven't done DJ gigs in ages; the last one was at Swaeg's two years party in June 2006. After that it's been complete silence as far as my "DJing" goes.)

Suomen kovimmassa kasvussa oleva kesäfestivaali Konemetsä järjestetään tänä vuonna neljännen kerran 6.–8. heinäkuuta. Festivaalin tapahtumapaikka on sama kuin edellisinä vuosina: Ollila, Marttilan kunnassa.

Innovatiivisuudestaan tunnettu tapahtuma tulee olemaan kansainvälisempi kuin koskaan sekä artistien että yleisön osalta. Ulkomaiset ja kotimaiset elektronisen musiikin huippuartistit tuodaan yhteen esiintymään uusien nousujohteessa olevien artistien kanssa.

Esiintyjälista julkaistaan 1. toukokuuta ja tätä ennen ennakkolippuja saa ostaa hintaan 32 euroa. Tämän jälkeen ennakkolipun hinta on 38 euroa ja festivaaliportilta 45 euroa. Hinnat sisältävät välityspalkkion ja ovat voimassa koko festivaalin ajan. Lippuja myyvät mm. Tiketti, Lippupalvelu, Streat Beat ja Blanko. Viime vuonna loppuunmyytyyn Konemetsään myydään tänä vuonna enintään 3000 lippua.

Bass & Beer Party has been one of the few remaining torch-bearers of electro in Tampere, including in their nights also other styles of electronic dance music, such as drum'n'bass, dubstep and hip hop.

From the introduction on Bass & Beer Party MySpace site:

"Bass & Beer got started when Squash and Bob Ryynänen wanted to organize club where people could see proper lives supported by great DJs. Jere P soon came along as well. After about one year of some parties with various names, 11 September 2004 saw the first official Bass & Beer Party in Telakka, Tampere. Since then, there has been many memorable nights with lives like Huoratron, Dos Noun, Polytron and Blamstrain and some bad ass DJ action by Rikos Records collective, Resound, Sire and Kongocrew among others. When it comes to the residents, Jere P has mainly been playing the lousy slots, driving cars and arranging some women for the afterparties, as Squash and Bob have been doing the organizing and playing the better slots. It must be said that when the afterparties have occurred, it has been Jere to take care of the gals. In the winter of 2006 Bass & Beer did a little tour in Finland, co-operating for example with Ikahu posse from Lahti. 2006 also witnessed birth of Tammerforce club, the fruit of B&B's co-project with legendary Telex.

Electronic Music Films

I was recently asked if I knew any documentary films that would shed more light on the history and beginnings of electronic music. I did some searches, and subsequently found out that most of those documentaries in existence (well, at least those listed at Internet) concentrate mostly on the latest developments in electronic music, or to be more precise, electronic dance music and rave culture.

The early history of electronic music (before 1960s, an area mostly populated by academic/avantgarde composers and inventors of electronic instruments) seems to be only sporadically (or as footnotes) featured in most existing documentaries, bar perhaps Steven M. Martin's 1994 feature on León Theremin or even Mika Taanila's 2002 Future Is Not What It Used To Be on Finnish electronic instrument inventor Erkki Kurenniemi; not forgetting the films dedicated to Robert Moog or Bruce Haack. If you know of any other related documentary films, please let me know.

Discosusi and Finnish DJ Hall of Fame

Diskosusi ("Disco Wolf") was a magazine (or maybe "fanzine" would be a more appropriate description for this pocket-size amateur publication) that was published in Tampere from 1979 to 1982, as its sole purpose to unite Finnish DJs, disco music fans and clubbers of the day. In its heyday Diskosusi was distributed in Finnish discos and clubs, at its best reaching an edition of 10.000 copies. The primus motor behind Discosusi was Pentti "DJ Pena" Teräväinen (b. 1956), one of the veterans of Finnish disco culture and an organiser of the union of DJs who started his record-spinning career in 1972. Diskosusi did its share in contributing to local DJ/disco culture with charts, background histories of artists, DJ interviews and naturally record reviews. The magazine covered all popular styles of disco and dance music, but also some artists performing 50s style of rock'n'roll and rockabilly revival, extremely popular in the late 70s Finland, would find their way to the pages of Diskosusi.

The DJ culture has undergone many changes since the original disco days. Whereas today's "star" DJs mostly remain just silent and technical masters of record beatmatching, the yesteryear DJs were often hyper-talkative and flamboyant "masters of ceremony", not only spinning records but also introducing them to audiences and raising their spirits the best they could; sometimes also wearing outlandish costumes to add to the rockstar-like appearance. Finnish discotheque culture celebrates this year its 40th birthday, though the actual heyday of disco was had in the late 70s when blockbuster films like Saturday Night Fever kicked off the dancefloor mania also in these Northern latitudes.

One of the Discosusi interviewees was Tapani "DJ Beaver" Ripatti (b. 1950), who had became a small celebrity in the late 70s by being a regular face in TV's popular "jukebox jury" show called Levyraati, and through his own radio shows -- such as Ocsid (read that backwards) -- in 80s and 90s gained a legendary position in Finland playing Hi-NRG disco and Italo, and later on even moving to rave techno. (I had an honour myself to DJ in 2004 as a warm-up to Mr. Ripatti in Helsinki's Kerma -- during my own set, punters were content to stay sitting down sipping their beers, but when Don Ripatti started to work the room with his classic 80s and 90s tracks and did his famous speaks over the records, the same people just went nuts on the dancefoor!)

DJ Pena, still going strong these days (though playing for more mature audiences now) with his Discopress and Hitit magazine, is also instrumental in establishing the Finnish DJ Hall of Fame, the gallery of DJs who have behind them a career of at least 25 years (and now found also exhibited at Tampere's Tabu Wine Bar). There are now over 30 members in the DJ Hall of Fame, including such disc-spinning veterans as Tapani "Beaver" Ripatti, Markku "DJ Edward" Vesala, Jyrki "Jyräys" Hämäläinen, Pekka "Takku" Kotilainen, Kari "Nite" Niiranen, Pentti "Poppamies" Kemppainen, Esko "Eemu" Riihelä, and Johnny-Kai "Johnny" Forssell; many of these familiar names also in Finnish music media and radio.

The Last Ever Alternative Night @ Yo-Talo

After running since 1995, DJs Henkka and Mikko (image below) have decided to call it a day with their Alternative Night Saturday discos at Tampere's Yo-Talo. The last Alternative Night will be on Saturday 23 September 2006.

I guest-DJed myself at these events in the late 1990s but only found it really frustrating in the end, so I quit. Because there were not really too many chances to play anything that would challenge the Britpop hierarchy of the day. Still, it's a bit sad to see this institution go.

John Peel: Getting Older and Still Getting Into New Music

[John Peel: you can be an old fart, but you don't have to be a boring old fart!]

One person I admire very much -- and also look up to as a role model in what I'm trying to do myself -- is the late British radio DJ John Peel. He started his career during the early 60s beat era and then became one of the most prominent voices in the 1960s UK musical underground with his radio shows such as Perfumed Garden. John Peel was born in 1939 so he wasn't exactly a young turk any more even in those days.

And to the late-60s musical era Peel might have as well stuck for the rest of his life, just keeping playing his hippie music favourites for his aging peers as a nostalgia act, but instead, he preferred to go on. He kept up with was happening in the musical underground -- punk, alternative, indie, electronic dance music, you name it, and without prejudices and getting stuck to any purist ghettos -- all the way to October 2004 when he sadly passed away. All this time championing new music and acts, spreading the word about them to people, constantly seeking for what is fresh and innovative. My intention here is not to pay lip service, only to show that a person can go on musically even after that dreaded milestone of thirty years of age.

Eclectro Lounge

Some time ago DJ Sane a.k.a. Santeri Vuosara (yes, the same guy who has recorded and performed with M.A. Numminen) asked me if I was interested to launch a new club night at a bar called Green Grass here in Tampere. Since I always feel I get too little DJ gigs, you bet I didn't hesitate to say yes. We agreed on that the event would be called Eclectro Lounge, starting on 10 Thursday, 10 February 2005. The "grand" opening night will be tomorrow, with guest DJs Mike Not (my producer partner in Kompleksi) and 5€Schwag (a.k.a. Joonas, Tampere's IDM maestro recording as Toiminto) who also runs local Swäg nights where I have guest DJed.

I guess I'll be mostly playing old and new electro, some synthpop and IDM, and, eh, the obligatory Italo/disco material; perhaps also a little bit of old 60s-70s Moog classics. I'm interested to play some more experimental stuff, perhaps also a little non-electronic material, such as Krautrock, 60s garage rock and psychedelia and, hell, just whatever; it's an eclectic night after all. You never really know; a lot of it will depend on audience's reactions; always very unpredictable. I always get quite neurotic about DJing, in fact; the ensuing symptoms I call Discophrenia. Wish me luck.

Now I've been spending the last days spreading out flyers and sticking posters to bulletin boards all over Tampere; which can be a hellish task with your bare fingers in freezing winter weather; with your fucked-up staple gun which doesn't agree to function properly half the time, and other people sticking their own event posters over your own -- meaning you have to add new posters there at least once a day. You really have to love what you're doing to see all this trouble.
