pHinn, The Best DJ In Tampere???

I was truly awestruck this morning when I opened the Valo weekend supplement of local Aamulehti newspaper. They had decided to choose "The Best Three" from various areas of culture (80s heavy metal singers included) here in Tampere and around the world. I thought someone had dropped some hallucinogen to my morning coffee without my knowing, when I browsed the article and my eyes ended up in this little part there...

You see, there was also a section "Tiskijukat" ("disc jockeys"), and as the three best DJs they had chosen as number three Sami Koivikko (a local minimal house man, who has released an album for Berlin's Shitkatapult, and done tons of gigs in Europe and Russia); the second place justifiedly belonged to DJ Infekto (a.k.a. Riku Pentti), the real workhorse of Tampere's drum'n'bass/breakbeat scene, another DJ with countless gigs around the world and a recording artist too. Also familiar from The Skillsters and Bomfunk MCs.

And here's the strangest thing: in the first place there was one pHinn, whom they described with the words: "The underground man Erkki Rautio prefers kommandomixing in the punk spirit to technical superiority. A good gig comes about with some personal ideas and a large record collection." Wheeeeeeew. I'm speechless.

(Well, the funny thing really is that I haven't done DJ gigs in ages; the last one was at Swaeg's two years party in June 2006. After that it's been complete silence as far as my "DJing" goes.)

More on the Philosophy of Kommandomixing

Kommandomix Manifesto

Not all of us have huge budgets to spend on coolest brand new vinyls, but have to rely on our earlier record collections that have been accumulating along the years. And mixing "live" at a club with mixers and monitors that, more often than not, tend to be faulty in some way and with an additional burden of having about a billion other distractions (drunken punters bothering and harassing the DJ, etc.) constantly going around you, it's hard to be immaculate in your beatmatching even for a more accomplished DJ. Of course it's easier in the peace and calm of your own home (especially if you are computer-assisted). So you have to find other ways out: therefore kommandomixing.

Using military metaphors is not an accident: I think arranging clubs and playing records there can be called a sort of warfare -- you advance, retreat and improvise according to the situation, take the terrain into account, try to find out who your allies are, and do your best to predict beforehand the movements of your adversaries. Read Sun Tzu and Clausewitz.

Kommandomixing Manifesto by pHinn

What Is Kommandomixing?
by pHinn

Kommandomixing is a do-it-yourself antidote to the anal retentive DJs, who want to be technically immaculate in their beatmatching skills and their no-life fanboys who blindly worship their heroes, wishing to become like them.

The DJs being today's counterpart to yesteryear's guitar heros in rock music, that revered art of "seamless" beatmatching and other technical turntable trickery has become the equivalent to the elaborate rock guitar solos of any of your regular heavy metal stadium acts.

You can see these irritating purist twerps at clubs -- instead of dancing and enjoying themselves -- watching and listening carefully to the DJs spinning records, taking careful note and bitterly commenting on any possible error in mixing, "galloping" beats and so on.

The idea behind kommandomixing is to put a complete stop to all this, and give more power to those otherwise "technically deprived" people (such as those girl DJs who are, in typical sexist attitutes, often needlessly derided in comparison to their supposedly "superior" male counterparts) who want play their records in public and share with their audience some musical gems people might not hear otherwise.

One does not need to spend 12 hours a day at turntables practising mixing and beatmatching. All one needs is a good record collection, energy, innovation and some personal ideas! Remember this was what punk was all about. Just do it!
