Magyar Posse: 'Whirlpool of Terror and Tension'
Magyar Posse: 'Whirlpool of Terror and Tension'
Magyar Posse is a Finnish instrumental postrock act which takes its cues among all from Ennio Morricone's film music and 70s progressive rock, à la Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". This Magyar Posse video by Lauri Warsta and Jouni Karttunen was awarded the "Golden Pumpeli", the first prize at Oulu Music Video Festival of 2006.

What Is Skweee?

Flow magazine has an article on Skweee, the new Scandinavian electronic dance music style.
Synthetik Skandinavian Funk is called Skweee.
The Synthetik Skandinavian Funk, or Skweee music, obviously origins from Scandinavia -- less obvious is that it was created by a man called Frans Carlqvist, who is also known as Pavan. He's the founder of the small independent label Flogsta Danshall that focuses on this type of music. Recently a new Skweee-label popped up in Finland, called Harmönia. The time was right to let Pavan explain.
For those that haven't heard the music, explain what Skweee is!
Skweee is instrumental, pretty primtive electronic music influenced by the rhythms of R'n'B, dancehall and funk. It usually consists of a 'dirty' sound, vibes that make you think of early electro, techno and c-64 music. When you hear it, you know what Skweee is.
For those that have heard it, but yet don't understand. Please, help them out.
Well, the tempo is pretty low around 90-110 bpm. Sometimes it contains parts of Arabic music. A lot of square waves and kind of lo-fi. Apart from a couple of Skweee-remixes that've been made, most Skweee is released on 7" vinyl."

Metablogging

We are working on one major project now (about which I'd rather be talking only when we've got more of it together), so I haven't had time to update this blog much lately, and I don't think it would serve its purpose too much, either, if I only kept linking some favourite video clips of mine from YouTube here.
Judging by comments from certain people it's funny that I might have appeared a somewhat depressed person in the past or perhaps might have talked about it too much here if I've been under the weather myself. So I started to seriously think about it, and decided I don't want to talk about those personal emotions in public, as if computer screen was some sort of confession grill for me. At least not that much that I have before. Because I realise how gratuituous that sort of wallowing in the mud of personal depressions can appear for the people who have to keep witnessing it. It's a vicious circle ultimately leading nowhere unless a person has enough will to do a conscious decision to get out of that rut. (I'm talking mostly about myself, of course, not exactly anyone else's situation.) We live in a therapy culture of self-victimization, and being a victim is one role I don't want be perceived as. As for me, I guess being able to work and create constantly is the exact thing that keeps me happy.
So, it seems I might be running out of topics here if it concerns my own psycho-geography. Perhaps this blog will be less personal and more a "bulletin board" announcing our own projects, and occasionally writing and linking about things that I find myself interesting. As you have noticed, this change has been going on for awhile already, and will probably continue. I don't know when I'm going to talk to you again, so till then: may you keep walking in the light.

Popmusiikin vuosisata (1968)

Popmusiikin vuosisata ("The Century of Pop Music", Tammi 1968) by Pekka Gronow and Seppo Bruun was probably one the first books in Finnish seriously delving into popular music. In this book Gronow and Bruun chronicle popular musical styles in Finland from the early 20th century to their own days, also giving room to a brief history of Western (read: mostly American) pop music from jazz and blues to rock music. The book provides indispensable info on Finnish 1960s when tango still ruled supreme in domestic pop and any rock bands playing outside Helsinki risked being subjected to physical violence if they refused to play tango, foxtrot and other "old dance music" for the countryside audiences, and Finnish rock in general was only in its infancy; Blues Section (which had just split when the book came out) mentioned as one of the biggest domestic promises. M.A. Numminen and The Sperm are also there as some brief, passing examples of the new "underground music". Of the international bands of its own time The Beatles, Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, Yardbirds, Doors and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention are all briefly introduced or at least namechecked; Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground being some notable omissions, both bands becoming household names only in the 70s. Alongside black and white photographs, the book also includes some original illustrations from Timo Aarniala, who also provided cover art for Suomen Talvisota 1939-1940's legendary album (not to talk about Aarniala's own underground comics of the time).

The Last Ever Alternative Night @ Yo-Talo

After running since 1995, DJs Henkka and Mikko (image below) have decided to call it a day with their Alternative Night Saturday discos at Tampere's Yo-Talo. The last Alternative Night will be on Saturday 23 September 2006.
I guest-DJed myself at these events in the late 1990s but only found it really frustrating in the end, so I quit. Because there were not really too many chances to play anything that would challenge the Britpop hierarchy of the day. Still, it's a bit sad to see this institution go.

Tammerforce 25 August 2006 Images

Orgue Electronique's Brian Chinetti and Legowelt's Danny Wolfers
Sakke Karipuro, that ever-trusty court photographer of Tampere electronic dance music scene has photos he took of last night's Tammerforce event here:
http://sakarik.1g.fi/kuvat/Events/tammerforce-20060825-feat_legowelt_and_orgue_electronique/
Holland's Orgue Electronique and Legowelt were both amazing, and I (the guy in white Murdercapital T-shirt for those who were there) danced my ass off. Soundwise a lot of it made me think of 80s Chicago house à la Adonis' 'No Way Back', Sakke compared some Legowelt stuff to Leo Anibaldi and DJ Autobass raved to me about their 101.
And if you watch closely, you can also see the members of Kompleksi lurking somewhere there in the pics...

Jarkko Laine In Memoriam

Jarkko Laine (17 March 1947 - 19 August 2006)
Finnish writer, poet and playwright Jarkko Laine has passed away. Laine became known in the late 60s as one of the pioneers in Finnish underground culture when he published in Turku with another "U" luminary, Markku Into, their provocative counterculture magazine Aamurusko. Laine also provided with Into and M.A. Numminen lyrics for the band Suomen Talvisota 1939-1970. Furthermore, Laine wrote lyrics for Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki.

Cerrone: 'Supernature'
Talking about Kenny Everett and Hot Gossip, it was at Everett's show where I first heard Cerrone's now-classic Eurodisco hit 'Supernature', where Gossips did their thing to this song. Unfortunately YouTube doesn't offer (at least, not yet) Hot Gossip's performance to 'Supernature' but above you can check Cerrone's hilarious original video (Magical Mystery Tour, anyone?) from 1977.
And while on the subject, here's another classic Eurodisco moment from 1977 for you, by Space:

The Genius of Kenny Everett!
Opening credits to a typical Kenny Everett episode
Kenny Everett (1944-1995) was a British madcap TV comedian who came into prominence in the 60s as a radio DJ. His Kenny Everett Video Show / Video Cassette was shown here in Finland in the early 1980s as Videoviihdettä. Featuring the hilarious Captain Kremmen sci-fi parody animations and such memorable characters played by Kenny Everett himself as Cupid Stunt (below) and Sid the Snot, this show with its combination of some wacky post-punk era anarchism, snazzy graphics & Pythonesque animations, contemporary pop culture (such people as David Bowie performed there) and lots of conservatives-scaring sexual innuendo (Everett's irreverent sketches and the steamy performances of Hot Gossip dance troupe) remains in my memories alongside even Monty Python's Flying Circus. Show some reruns, please!

Ursula Martinez: Is It Performance Art, Comedy, Stage Magic or Strip Tease?

You've probably never seen anything like this...
Watch one example of Ursula Martinez stage shows here (erm, so I suppose it is not suitable for children).
***
From her own site:
Ursula Martinez is a London-based writer and performer. She has worked with several leading British experimental theatre companies including Forced Entertainment, Insomniac Productions, The Glee Club, and Duckie, with whom she is an associate artist.
10 years ago Martinez began working as a solo artist on the queer club/cabaret circuit where she soon achieved cult status.
"She sets fire to her tits, interrogates her parents, re-defines class, blurs fiction with reality, cures homosexuals, gives birth to penises, tells autobiographical stories, deconstructs performance and sings South London suburban flamenco - from high brow to low brow, from spectacle to confessional, from live art to light entertainment, Ursula Martinez produces solo and collaborative performance for theatre, site-specific, installation, cabaret, night club, film, television... birthdays, weddings and Barmitzvahs!"
