Living Space Records is a new record label from Finland. It was founded in 2007 by DJ:ing friends Joel Hypén (aka Jellona) and Matti Nives. The imprint aims to offer a fresh take on left-of-the road electronic rhythm music, such as downtempo, leftfield hiphop, dubstep, deep house, future jazz, skwee, and so on. The label managing duo can also be caught DJ:ing around and about. Previous label nights have found the Living Space DJs in such locations as m12 in Berlin, Stadt Venlo in Cologne, and mbar in Helsinki.
In June 2007 Living Space Records released its first 12", the 'In Phase' EP (LSP001) by Ninja Tune / Solid Steel demo contest winner Empty Chair. The record was cut on green vinyl and it was also the first of a series entitled "The Colours of Living Space". The release has already received some enthusiatic feedback, and has been featured in several highly-regarded radio shows such as Worldwide (Gilles Peterson, BBC), Basic Soul (Simon Harrison), Bogaloo Radio (Matthias Desch), Sound of Swound (Rupert&Mennert), Nine2Five (Petrus), and many more.
The Living Space concept also includes a radio show on Vienna's play.fm. Once a month, Joel and Matti share their most precious electronic cuts with anybody willing to tune in. Guests are also featured on the show occasionally. Actually, the whole thing started with the radio show on (Finnish University town) Joensuu's Oi FM radio station, so hosting their own programme is quite essential for the Living Space personnel.

Booze is the formidable collision of Milo Smee (Chrome Hoof) and Demian Castellanos (The Oscillation); taking a break from their respective projects to deliver this febrile outburst of gravelly percussive filth -- 'Insanity Drive'. And The
Lefthanded herald from Finland and bring their lunar psych to the roster after years of self-imposed musical exile in their native country. Bot'Ox features the talents of masterful French producer and DJ Cosmo Vitelli, here bringing a touch of the cinematic with the sumptuous disco groove 'The Crash Theme'. Already notorious for their recent DJ set at the "Hairy On The Inside" event in London, Muscleheads are a shadowy duo whose debut track 'Phosphorescence' is a remarkable experience in droning disco-fied Krautrock. The 63 Crayons delivers a mutated motorik classic in the form of the Silver Apples-esque 'Heal Us'. All of these tracks are exclusive to this DC compilation.
Alongside these new characters certain members of the DC familiar are present with fresh new offerings. Depth Charge, the eponymous leader of our creed who some feared lost in musical oblivion -- returns to dispel any such speculation with the truly masterful, Carpenter-esque 'Castle Of Doom'. Meanwhile Padded Cell give us a unique version of 'Beautiful Gloom', a track taken from their new album Night Must Fall (DCR72) but reworked here by Liquid Liquid's Dennis Young. The Oscillation's bucolic 'Somatone' is a glimpse of one of the many new directions that Demian Castellanos is heading in with his forthcoming material. Andy Meecham's Emperor Machine goes into library-esque territories with the bizarre mechanical guile of 'Swiss Machine', whilst Kelpe's 'Shipwreck Glue' is one of the standout tracks from the acclaimed Ex-Aquarium (DCR82) album. Due to repeated demands from the music-consuming masses we have also featured here Kelpe's remarkable remix of The Oscillation's 'Head Hang Low', previously available as download only b-side.
Released just prior to the summer, when DC artists old and new, will present a series of unprecedented live events, Death Before Distemper 2 - Revenge Of The Iron Ferret will provoke fear, rage, uncertainty and rabid delight amongst the musical hordes!

Toronto-based electro artists Solvent and Lowfish have been closely linked since the beginning of their respective careers, due in large part to their co-owned Suction Records label, probably the first, and certainly the weirdest, electro/IDM label to come out of Canada. Both issued their first recordings (via a split Lowfish/Solvent 12" in 1997), and later, debut full-lengths on Suction Records.
The label has remained inactive since 2003; "currently on indefinite hiatus," according to their website (suctionrecords.com). Well, that indefinite status has come to an end. NOW WE ARE DEAD. That's right, Suction Records is now officially done. But, just as they have continued to do since the label unofficially ceased operations in 2003, Solvent and Lowfish are forging ahead, with a slew of new and upcoming releases and activity.
To mark the passing of Suction Records, Solvent and Lowfish embarked on a series of live shows, together with their friends from Detroit, DJ Team Dethlab. The "Now We Are Dead" tour, took place January 19 to February 2 2008, hitting Toronto, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Hamilton, and Cleveland.
"Now We Are Dead" is also the name of a brand-new 4-track Solvent/Lowfish split 12", strictly limited to 400 copies with 2 exclusive tracks each. This will be the final Suction Records release and will be available to purchase directly from Suction Records.

We are Suction Records, from Canada. We have been releasing our unique brand of synthesizer pop for purists since 1997. We call it robot music.
Suction Records was founded by like-minded robot music composers Lowfish (Gregory de Rocher) and Solvent (Jason Amm). Originally considered part of North America's first wave of intelligent dance music labels (as pioneered by UK labels Warp and Rephlex in the early 1990s), Suction Records has slowly but surely established itself as a strong, singular voice in the electronic music underground. Combining the best elements of vintage electropop and modern electronica, Suction Records has created a distinct musical and visual esthetic that is bold yet fuzzy, confrontational yet playful, robot yet human.
Besides releasing the debut recordings by both Solvent and Lowfish, Suction Records has also put out releases by Skanfrom, GD Luxxe, and the Mitgang Audio. Other contributors to the label (comp tracks, remixes, etc) include: ADULT., Isan, David Kristian, Perspects, Lali Puna, D'Arcangelo, Pluxus, Orgue Electronique, and more.
Underground electronica is currently witnessing a resurgence in '80s-influenced synthpop, but while Suction Records has clearly been at the forefront of synthpop's return to form, we are by no means a retro label. Acclaimed international DJ and Warp recording artist Andrew Weatherall concedes: "Suction, always a byword for quality, ransack the past and create a future that sets standards as far as electro's New Wave is concerned. In an Eighties overkill atmosphere these people are part of the elite commando division against which other units should be judged."

Ilpo Väisänen (of Pan sonic) and Dirk Dresselhaus (of Schneider TM) have been playing freeform noise with a tendency to drone things out since 1999. The whole thing is quite a no man's landish affair: somewhere between and in the middle of industrial, dub, new music, indierock, blues and science fiction soundtracks. From 2004 on they were joined by Icelandic cellist/multi-instrumentalist Hildur Guðnadóttir (Lost in Hildurness, múm etc.) on a regular basis.
Kalmukia is vast epic sprawling through guitar riffs spanning deep electronic canyon overlooked by a melancholic grey sky. A journey leading to discovery and a final mutation. All players involved delicately playing off each other creating a mesmerising work that sounds like nothing they have done before yet still retaining the audio signatures they have become known for. Recorded 2006 in Berlin. Mastered at Piethopraxis, Köln, October 2007. Story and drawings by Ilpo Väisänen. CD packaged in a notebook style sleeve. Pertti Rautio in memoriam
Kuopion yliopiston sosiaalipsykologian lehtori, YTL Pertti Rautio menehtyi 30.11.2007 Tampereen yliopistollisessa sairaalassa nopeasti edenneen sairauden uuvuttamana.
Rautio oli syntynyt 8.5.1944 Lapualla. Hän suoritti Tampereen yliopistossa yhteiskuntatieteiden maisterin ja lisensiaatin tutkinnot vuosina 1973 ja 1991. Yliopistotyön hän aloitti Tampereen yliopiston yhteiskuntatieteiden tutkimuslaitoksella vuonna 1973 ja työskenteli Tampereen yliopistossa tutkijana sekä opetustehtävissä. Vuonna 1989 hän siirtyi Kuopion yliopistoon.
Opetustyö oli Pertti Rautiolle sydämenasia. Niin paljon kuin hän pitkän opetusuransa aikana ehtikin luennoimaan ja ohjaamaan opiskelijoiden töitä, hän ei koskaan tuntunut väsyneen tai kadottaneen kiinnostustaan opettamiseen. Hänen laaja sivistyneisyytensä, rauhallinen luennointitapansa ja aidosti opiskelijoista välittävä asenteensa tekivät hänestä suuresti arvostetun ja pidetyn opettajan. Tästä kertoo koskettavasti toisen vuoden opiskelijan viesti tämän kuultua Pertin kuolemasta: "Pertti oli aivan ihana meidän opiskelijoiden ymmärtäjänä, ja mikä merkitys meille onkaan että opintojen alussa menetämme niin suurenmoisen ihmisen elämästämme. Ajattelin aina, että Pertillä on paljon sanottavaa ja ihailin häntä niin ihmisenä kuin opettajana, suloinen ihana Pertti".
Opetustyön ohessa Pertti Rautio teki myös tutkimusta. Hänen keskeisin kiinnostuksen kohteensa oli yhteiskunnan säilymisen kannalta keskeiset moraalitunteet ja niiden biologinen perusta. Aihe muodostaa jännevälin yhteiskuntafilosofiasta biologiaan, ja Pertti puhuikin paljon ihmistieteiden välisen synteesin ja vuoropuhelun puolesta. Moraalitunteiden tarkastelussa hän pyrki luomaan siltaa Adam Smithistä Rolf Lagerborgin ja Edward Westermarckin kautta Antonio Damasioon ja muuhun uusimpaan neurotieteeseen. Pertti Raution viimeiseksi julkaisuksi jäi hänen yhdessä Mikko Saastamoisen kanssa toimittamansa artikkelikokoelma Minuus ja identiteetti. Sosiaalipsykologian ja osuustoimintaopin uranuurtajaa Antero Rinnettä koskeva väitöskirja oli yhtä lukua vaille valmis.
Pertti Rautio osallistui Kuopion yliopiston hallinnollisiin tehtäviin toimimalla vuosina 2004 – 2005 sosiaalipsykologian ja sosiologian laitoksen johtajana, vuosina 2001 - 2007 yhteiskuntatieteellisen tiedekunnan tiedekuntaneuvoston jäsenenä sekä vuodesta 2004 alkaen yliopiston hyvinvointityöryhmän jäsenenä. Suomalaisten sosiaalipsykologien keskuudessa Pertti Rautio tunnetaan aktiivisuudestaan sosiaalipsykologian valtakunnallisen ammatillisen opetuksen järjestämisessä sekä Suomen sosiaalipsykologit ry:n toiminnassa.
Työyhteisön jäsenenä Pertti nautti kaikkien vilpitöntä arvostusta. Hän oli rauhallinen, vastuullinen, viisaasti asioita punnitseva, vaatimaton ja vankkumattoman hyväntahtoinen. Yliopisto oli hänelle enemmän kuin työpaikka, se oli viisauden harjoittamisen yhteisö. Niin ikään sosiaalipsykologia oli hänelle enemmän kuin tieteenala, se oli elävää elämää – kuten eräs hänen vanha ystävänsä toteaa, hän oli "oikea sosiaalipsykologi myös ihmisenä".
Kotikaupungissaan Tampereella Pertti Rautio oli aktiivinen kansalaiskeskustelija. Hän oli mukana muun muassa kauppahallin virastotaloa suojelevassa liikkeessä 1980-luvulla sekä 1990-luvulta toimineessa Kurpitsa-liikkeessä, jonka tavoitteena on Pispalan-Tahmelan vanhojen kasvimaiden suojelu.
Pertti Rautio pyrki kaikessa toiminnassaan vaalimaan kestäviä arvoja, olipa sitten kyseessä historiallinen kaupunkikuva, sosiaalitieteen klassikot, sivistysyliopiston idea tai perinteinen hyvän ihmisen ihanne.
