The Chicks have been busy in the last 2 years, filming video, making art installations, Girl Monster extravaganzas, reading books, exhibiting all over the planet, making patchwork fashion collections (for Insight, Crystal Ball and Yoox.com), building high heeled shoe guitars, high tech Super suits that trigger sound and video and other Objekt instruments ... AND THEY EVEN FOUND THE TIME TO MAKE THIS NEW RECORD!

CHICKS ON SPEED’s fifth album Cutting The Edge utilises the collective as a mechanism for the production of instantaneous sound and music recordings. The Chicks worked with: Whomadewho, Mark Stewart, Joe Robinson, A.L. Steiner, Kathi Glas, Anat Ben-David, Christopher Just, Fred Schneider, Gerhardt Potuznik, Patrick Pulsinger and especially UK Super producer team “A Scholar and Physician”.

The studios, where the album was made, included hotel rooms, trains, bathrooms in cellars of art galleries, over Skype and live recordings taken from their Art Rules performances @ MoMA and Centre Pompidou.

The songs range from self-referencing pieces, like “Art Rules” and “Extended Paintbrush”, full of insider information and irony, poking fun at the art world (to encourage people to be courageous and humorous) 60’s bubble gum pop “BUZZ”, which is all about the lost glamour of flying, Fassbinder inspired “Black and White Diva” featuring Kiki Moorse, who departed the group 2 years ago, to persue a solo career. “Sewing Machine” came about after the Chicks found a photo of themselves in El Pais crediting them as being Kraftwerk on stage. “Vibrator” ended up sounding so B52’s-ish that the Chicks just had to call up Fred Schneider. And yes, the recording happened over Skype.

The "Objekt Instruments" are the newest addiction the Chicks on Speed have, they’re the ultimate culmination of fashion, performance and wearable sculptural art, taking advantage of the latest technological developments in science and new media. Most of the songs on the album have been created by using the "Objekt Instruments"; amplified rocks, a high heeled shoe guitar, sax going through a guitar amp, plucking a gutted Piano, and the inspiration for the album title, the scissors.

Watch out for these "Objekt Instruments" handmade by the Chicks @ the new COS live shows and exhibitions the world over.
Oh and by the way, experimentalism has never sounded so Pop!

Chicks on Speed are Melissa Logan and Alex Murray-Leslie who've conspired together since they ran their illegal bar together, behind the Munich Art Academy in the late 90s.You can try this at home. Sew these ingredients together and you got Chicks On Speed's happy white girl howling surprise of a fifth album, "Cutting The Edge":
1) Take a lot of art and heart and make it smart with catchy, scratchy melodies and pithy, echoey words that lacerate and negotiate the crazy state of human play. Primp and prep primary popping colors and lock them down with hooks that click tight, in saucy, defiant songs that spin you across the shiny dancefloors of your mind.
2) Make tunes that matter. Dramas and meditations in pop song form. Vibrator, whose B52's panache lured that band's Fred Schneider to join its sexy romp. Super Surfer Girls' funny beach fantasies; Art Rules Pop's scalding satire of art's money dance; Sew- ing Machine's found sounds from the sweatshop and inter-linguistic lyrics, the provocative textures of Extended Paint- brush's bouncy hedonistic agit-pop; the sheer provocation of Sex In Der Stadt's recycling porn ads; and the title track's timeless question - Are you fake? The Single 'Super Surfer Girl', in CHIX style, isn't just a song, but a full-blown international advertising campaign, based around a range of girls surfwear, COS designed in collaboration with Insight, Australia, titled "INSIGHT ON CHICKS ON SPEED" to be launched on December 5th worldwide, along with a video, by New York artist Mariah Garnett.

Always with Attitude, the Chicks created the song Super Surfer Girl, as an anthem for surf babes the world over, poking fun at feminist theory, and yet, empowering and encouraging young women to take their destiny into their own hands. 'Super Surfer Girl' is WALL OF SOUND and the love of kitsch combined into a celebration of beach and rough surf culture.

News from BadFrench, the new project of Germany's Kiki Moorse (ex-Chicks on Speed) with Andreas (Kreidler) Reihse:

The Institut im Glaspavillon (@ Volksbühne Berlin, Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Berlin, Germany) is glad to welcome BadFrench at 9 pm on Saturday, July 12, 2008, for their premier performance, a lecture and a video presentation.

BadFrench is a new music project by Kiki Moorse, former member of Chicks on Speed, and Andreas Reihse, member of the Düsseldorf band Kreidler. The duo's music is electronic, inspired by French chanson, Kiki invents herself as a D.I.Y.-diseuse. The work of BadFrench is characterized by a commitment to style, but also by a certain melancholy. The duo's first single, "My Parisian Friend", will appear in September 2008, including remixes by Jason Forrest and Toffeetronic.

At the Institut Kiki and Andreas will introduce the project, talk about their concept and give a small concert. They will also introduce their first video (directed by Elsa Okazaki).

Vivien Goldman, a British journalist/musician writes for August's Wire about Chicks on Speed's gig at New York's MoMA on 24 June 2006:

"... seeing Chicks on Speed perform at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Effervescent, capricious and blessed with a Marx Sisters lunacy, the Chicks reminded me that some three decades had in fact passed since I first wrote about Women In Rock, back when a chick with a guitar was as noteworthy as quintuplets. (They hadn't yet invented IVF.)

The Chicks channelled the girly musicians I used to write about and sometimes also jam with, like The Slits, The Raincoats and Delta 5. Wearing a frothy skirt of multicoloured netting and what looked like rather painful black duct tape on her nipples, one Chick launched a programmed beat that seemed oddly familiar. Right before the vocals came in, I realised it was a speedier, electro take on Delta 5's agreeably stroppy vintage single, 'Mind Your Own Business'. Despite the shift in groove, Chicks on Speed stayed faithful to the original's insistent assurance. The expression had changed; but the rebel girl stance remained. It hit me like a drumroll that the change wasn't just in the drum pattern, but in our lives.

Chicks on Speed owned the stage with an assurance that also comes from knowing that, freaky and free as they are, their business operation is sound and functions independently. Their gig is viable. Most of the 70s/80s 'typical girls', including The Slits, Lora Logic and X-Ray Spex, were always marginalised as volatile novelties by the record industry.

While they played, the Chicks screened footage of themselves and friends cavorting naked on a rooftop, with the impish insouciance of a Dick Lester-era Beatles flick. Even in today's quite prudish New York, no MoMA guard came rushing to pull the plug. It was art, after all, and also an elated pagan, pan-sexual Bacchante frenzy flickering behind a giant sculpture by Rodin. At a moment when when pole dancers, strippers and hoes in general dominate so much hiphop discourse, without controlling the conversation, it was refreshing to see females get naked because they want to, filming themselves and controlling the use of their work. Definitely different from the reaction I got from my editor at Melody Maker when I rushed into his office in 1979 waving the first Slits album, Cut, with its sleeve of the trio naked and daubed in mud, and begged him to let me review it. The editor looked at the sleeve, blanched and gagged. "But they're so fat!" he finally exclaimed of the three regular-to-slender young women. "How could they do it?" Although they only got to make one more album, The Slits had clearly pressed a button marked ESCAPE -- and 30 years on, the door had swung open for Chicks on Speed. Their different drums marked a flightpath."

Offset magazines were yesteryear. Today, more limited, well-crafted and assorted publications catch l'air du temps. It is no longer about information but rather how information is packaged and what commodities are made available with it. In this World Tour Collector’s Edition Workshop with a total of six destinations, the first stop will be CMYK in Barcelona, which will also mark the birth of another new magazine project by Kimberly Lloyd, co-founder of M Publication.

An entirely fresh magazine concept will be introduced during this 6-hour workshop, giving the attendees insight on the techniques of producing a Collector's Edition with definite marketable potentials. The workshop is designed around the interaction and contribution of the attendees. Participating in branding, editorial grid, developing content and judging in the pre-selection of the content; gaining insight on how the bits and pieces become an epitome of fine art work. Get to know the entire range of paper, materials and creative work applied in the collection, from
offset to screen printing, from sown pieces of textile to hand-brushed aquarelles and more.

Only 100 - 200 units will be produced worldwide, all handcrafted, screened, certified and approved by a committee of participating collaborators together with the attendees. The final product will be made available for sale by distributors of leading museums, art fairs, bookshops, and boutiques world wide.

This new collection of new COS stagewear is a reaction to the boring and a celebration of the elaborate, including eccentric costuming, fantasy shoewear, convulsing in an investigation of unexplored femininity on stage. Chicks on Speed cannot buy what they need to wear on stage in mere mortal shops, therefore they have created unfashionable designs and everlasting classic concepts, to cater to their repertoire of multimedia extravaganical, electronic pop music on stage needs. The collection is a reflection of Chicks on Speed's recollective memory; of world tours, people and places and rock and roll living! It's an exhibition of mistakes processes and imperfection in progress. The core of the exhibition will be a collection of new COS shoes, 40 pairs and two sets of new elaborate stage outfits, including Chum Sang dresses from China... and Mad Max-inspired, chain wielding shammy disguises, plus a documentation of the making of the collection.

"A strange conical hat and cape ensemble sported by Hugo Ball at a poetry recital. A kettle worn as a handbag by a Manchester art punk. Art has often converged with the human body in strange new ways through the medium of fashion. The polar opposite of architecture, this meeting point has never been about totality ­ fashion is about heterogeneity, mixing and matching, modifying and diluting the absolute language of advertising and branding. A temporary, shape-shifting medium intended for recycling and manipulation, it has no time for the monumental but all the time in the world for sewing sequins.

Looking beyond the derogatory theoretical concepts that look to shame "fashion", and towards its role in the renaissance of craft

As technology conspires to liberate us from the shackles of manual labour (only to handcuff us to the keyboards and mice of the new slavemasters), we start to think about designing our own shackles, maybe in a nice grey wool knit. The labour of love and the hate of labour seem to coexist and coincide. Painstaking processes are reawakened with post-Marxist pleasures at stake. If Top Shop offers teen girls a truly democratic adaptation of high-design ideas for the mass market, we take on the high street with an ardent D.I.Y. spirit, customising, bastardising and personalising, establishing our own place within this democracy.

Fashion is once more about making and not following.

Denouncing (sex and the city-esque) fashion consumption as empowering/self-expressive and replacing this with empowerment by the handmade, Turn to the Left is a showcase of fashion projects, an opportunity to show ideas that lurk in the dark no man's land that stretches from art to fashion. Between the extremes of total wearability and pure concept, a platform for everything from performative stagewear and one-off designs to hand-crafted artefacts and accessories, reclaiming the catwalk from the closed circles of the industry. A celebration of the subversion of market trends, the fashion equivalent of the garage band myth, a brush with the conceptual, this is what clothing can be and what it can do.

This is low couture ­do or D.I.Y.!"

"Disko Cabine is a project that started about one and a half years ago. It was instigated by French illustration duo Cabine (Paul Ioannidis et Hervé Lecouffe) who are based in London since 1998. Knowing most of the artists on this project, having worked with some of them*, they decided to make their own compilation by regrouping them, and asking them for an original track or exclusive version (except Cobra Killer and Electronicat) for the project.

They organized notably some meetings between artists from Berlin and Paris which resulted in collaborations for this record like Jacno and Stereo Total, Khan and Brigitte Fontaine, Jeans Team and Elli Medeiros or Rachel Ortas with Boy From Brazil and Nicole Morier from Electrocute (Pocket Rocket).

Other artists from London, Paris and Berlin were also invited and contributed by giving a song to the project.

Thanks to the exclusivity of most of the tracks, more than a simple compilation, DISKO CABINE represents in the end an album reflecting Cabine's musical taste, a non-conformist state of mind against the current invasion of formatted music."

The initial visceral thrill of hearing Pan Sonic's stentorian electronics flooding the room, bursts of white noise scarifying huge edifices of primal rhythm, eventually gave way to a tiresome structure -- insert beat, efface with scouring distortion, repeat process. Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio did offer one of the festival's most enduring moments, invading the stage and wrestling with members of Chicks On Speed during the latter group's punk-electro number "Turn Of The Century". The Chicks's show is usually pure pleasure, but the trio looked as though they were going through the motions, until the shuffle-tech of "Fashion Rules" shocked them into overdrive.
