Music Videos by Shadowplay, Jimi Tenor & His Shamans and Op:l Bastards

Some pHinnWeb-related music videos, courtesy of YouTube user Lihaa77...

Shadowplay: 'Night Porter' (1985/1987, video by Hannu Puttonen)

Shadowplay, a Finnish cult band, who started in 1982, combining raw post-punk moods to jazz-tinged flavours provided by the trumpetist Marco Kosonen. In 1985 they released the now-legendary 7" 'Night Porter', taking its name from Liliana Cavani's decadent 1974 film of the same name. Shadowplay appeared with this song in 1986 Finnish film Kill City, which performance was the highlight of that otherwise best-to-be-forgotten flick. The albums Touch & Glow, Eggs & Pop and Raw Powder were also to follow. The band's henchman Brandi Ifgray was also to release two solo albums for Sähkö Recordings' sub Puu, produced by Jimi Tenor and Tuomo Puranen of The Elevators/Op:l Bastards.

Jimi Tenor & His Shamans live 1988

Before his career as an eclectic lounge-jazz-soul-funk man Jimi Tenor was known in the late 1980s for his industrial-tinged, oil barrel-banging band Shamans.

Op:l Bastards: 'Sagittarius III'

Legend of Gruppa Sagittarius is a 2001 short film by Hannu Puttonen featuring the track 'Sagittarius III' of Op:l Bastards.

China Life, The Latest Short Film by Tina Ulevik (Spul Films Australia)

    Tina Ulevik: China Life (2008)

Tina Ulevik of Spul Films Australia -- who created the music video for Kompleksi's 'Sara Pain' in 2007 -- has her latest short film finally finished and online, describing it as follows:

"Filmed on location in Suzhou & Shanghai, China, & accompanied by music from Finland's Since November, China Life explores glimpses of China seen through the eyes of a foreign traveller evoking the surreal landscapes of ancient & modern China. The film also acts as a metaphor for searching & belonging."

Padded Cell: 'Word of Mouth' (DC Recordings)

Padded Cell: 'Word of Mouth' (feat. Chloé Battant) (directed by Julian Hand, 2008)

And even more from the ever-productive DC Recordings of England's J. Saul Kane...

    Artist: Padded Cell
    Title: Word of Mouth
    Label: DC Recordings (UK)
    Cat. No: DCR90
    Format: 12" / digital download
    Release Date: 16 June 2008

    Tracklist:

    01. Word of Mouth - Glimmers Disko Drunkards Dub (5:46)
    02. Word of Mouth [feat. Chloé Battant] - Extended Version (5:22)
    03. Word of Mouth [feat. Chloé Battant] - Binary Chaffinch Rework (4:29)

    Press release notes:

"Word of Mouth" is the second single to be taken from Padded Cell's debut album Night Must Fall (DCR72). A dark slab of pop-noir that pulses with punk-funk energy, this is a cautionary tale of urban decay and spoiled love, as told by the beguiling voice of Chloé Raunet (of London band Battant -- Kill The DJ Records). Recalling the Au Pairs or Bush Tetras as much as the sound of early 80s New York, "Word of Mouth" follows the incendiary single "Savage Skulls" (DCR88) and features two wildly different remixes:

The Glimmers' remix ups the tempo and emphasises the punk-funk swagger, leaving Chloé's vocals out in preference to the sordid drunken parley of an unidentified clochard. Aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this electro-fied devil's dub will have the late night crowds quivering with deranged happiness!

The second remix comes courtesy of Binary Chaffinch, a shadowy figure who is usually seen beneath a cloak of silver playing drums for cosmic disco doom band Chrome Hoof. This factor is most apparent in the uncommon percussive approach that has rendered the original track unrecognisable except for the vocals, and virtually incomparable with any other musical style except in terms of its genius.

The cover art depicts the fruits of Padded Cell's unsavoury collaboration with La Boca: an act of visual necromancy that has been brought to life further in the forthcoming video directed by Julian Hand. The video will introduce this triangular cyclopean personage to the world as more than a 2-dimensional image, instead an actual creature, who although without arms of even a brow, will be seen casting her eye over the masses as part of Padded Cell's immanent live performances. Most notably of these live shows will be a special DC Recordings event in London on June 21st that will feature legendary percussionist Dennis Young (Liquid Liquid) playing live with Padded Cell. Sans Soleil (1983)

    Sans Soleil: intro

    Sans Soleil: Welcome to Tokyo

Sans Soleil: Repair the web of time

    Sans Soleil: Collectivisation [les rêves]

Sans Soleil: Year of the dog

    Sans Soleil: Teknoko

    Sans Soleil: fragment

One of the films I'd like to see again... Sans Soleil ("Sunless", 1983) is Chris Marker's (born in 1921 and maybe best known for La Jetée) famous documentary/experimental film/travelogue/cinematic essay/meditation on human memory; somewhere in the borderlines of dream, surrealism and science fiction. Visiting Africa, San Francisco and having a special emphasis on Japan, that home of the hyperreal, taking the viewer to manga shops and a special shrine dedicated to cats.

V/Vm Test Records, those crazy pig mask-wearing culture jammers of Blighty, can now be found also from YouTube! The label was started in 1996 by V/Vm a.k.a. Jim Kirby and Jansky Noise a.k.a. Andy "Animal" McGregor, a jovial nutter whom I met here in Tampere some years ago, by the way (last I've heard from Andy was when he was working on Homenaje, a compilation record dedicated to the victims of Madrid's 2004 Atocha terrorist strike). V/Vm has specialised among all in electronic (and totally illicit) noise rape versions of your favourite MOR hits, such as Chris de Burgh's 'Lady In Red'. V/Vm versions of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Relax' got the label angry calls from Frankie's lawyers. Nowadays Kirby is alone responsible for the operations of V/Vm.

    Some Detroit Techno Videos

A Number of Names: 'Sharivari' @ The Scene (1982)

Drexciya: 'Hydro Theory' (with footage from Blue Planet BBC series)

Model 500: 'The Passage' (with footage from 2001: A Space Odyssey)

YouTube offers some 313 techno-related videos such as a version of 'Sharivari' (there are many different spellings for this track, such as 'Sharevari', 'Charivari', etc.) by A Number of Names, which is considered one of the first Detroit techno tracks, if not the very first; I was quite amazed to find this video, made for the dance music show The Scene. Then there are some bootleg videos for Drexciya and Model 500, using footage from BBC and Kubrick's 2001, respectively.

múm: 'They Made Frogs Smoke 'Til They Exploded'

múm: 'They Made Frogs Smoke 'Til They Exploded' (2007)

múm is an Icelandic experimental group formed in 1997, known for some interesting albums like Finally We Are No One (2002). This beautifully disturbing video (a fair warning should be added here if you're a sensitive person) is for their single "They Made Frogs Smoke 'Til They Exploded", preceding the new album Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy (24 September '07).
