    Vaihe ¼ (@ Klubi, Tampere, 16 January 2009)

    MARry presents:
    Vaihe ¼
    @ Klubi, Tampere
    Friday 16 January 2009
    9 pm - 4 am
    age limit 18
    tickets 6 €

    live:

    Sami Koivikko (Spectral Sound, Shitkatapult)
    RRKK (Katusea)

    DJs:

    SSSOOOIII
    Sire (Step Ahead)
    Nilk

Vaihe ¼ Tullikamarin Klubilla 16. tammikuuta
    tiedote 08.01.2009
    julkaisuvapaa: heti

Dj Nilk puolestaan tarjoilee kahdella lautasella gourmet-aterian minimaaliteknoa.

Vaihe ¼ on nimensä mukaisesti osa useamman tapahtuman sarjaa. Klubin järjestää elektronista musiikkia ja kulttuuria edistävä yhdistys MARry, joka on ilahduttanut musiikinystäviä muun muassa kolme kertaa järjestämällään manSEDANse-festivaalilla.

    Electronic Dance Music: Where Next?

Trips Festival, San Francisco, 1966 - an early "rave" with Donald Buchla sounds

Some food for thought by Philip Sherburne for electronic dance music artists, DJs, clubbers and fans:

    http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/142152-the-month-in-techno

Well, I have no answers or solutions. Personally, at the moment the past and origins seem to be more inspiring than the current state of club culture, as just finishing Analog Days (2002) on the early days of analogue synths (Moog, Buchla, ARP, EMS) proved.

    Mark Stewart Is Back

    Mark Stewart: 'Loner' (2008)

    ON/OFF trailer

UK's Mark Stewart, an influential pioneer of electronic industrial/experimental/funk/dub/hip-hop sound who influenced everyone from Meat Beat Manifesto to Massive Attack to grime, returns with a new album called Edit (his last release was Kiss The Future compilation in 2005), a documentary film ON/OFF dedicated to him and his legendary post-punk band The Pop Group, plus a cover story in The Wire magazine of July 2008 (an unedited transcript of his interview here). Stewart also tells in the interview he's going to collaborate with Adult., which certainly makes it pretty interesting for pHinnWeb!

    Living Space Records

Living Space Records, a new Finnish label was launched last year. Info from the label:

Living Space Records is a new record label from Finland. It was founded in 2007 by DJ:ing friends Joel Hypén (aka Jellona) and Matti Nives. The imprint aims to offer a fresh take on left-of-the road electronic rhythm music, such as downtempo, leftfield hiphop, dubstep, deep house, future jazz, skwee, and so on. The label managing duo can also be caught DJ:ing around and about. Previous label nights have found the Living Space DJs in such locations as m12 in Berlin, Stadt Venlo in Cologne, and mbar in Helsinki.

In June 2007 Living Space Records released its first 12", the 'In Phase' EP (LSP001) by Ninja Tune / Solid Steel demo contest winner Empty Chair. The record was cut on green vinyl and it was also the first of a series entitled "The Colours of Living Space". The release has already received some enthusiatic feedback, and has been featured in several highly-regarded radio shows such as Worldwide (Gilles Peterson, BBC), Basic Soul (Simon Harrison), Bogaloo Radio (Matthias Desch), Sound of Swound (Rupert&Mennert), Nine2Five (Petrus), and many more.

The Living Space concept also includes a radio show on Vienna's play.fm. Once a month, Joel and Matti share their most precious electronic cuts with anybody willing to tune in. Guests are also featured on the show occasionally. Actually, the whole thing started with the radio show on (Finnish University town) Joensuu's Oi FM radio station, so hosting their own programme is quite essential for the Living Space personnel.

    FROM THE PRESS RELEASE
"[...] The Method, involving phases familiar to no other musical theory or practice, differs from most every more widely known technique of creative audio production in the highest degree, and is used for the sole purpose of summoning forth what could easiest be described as The Spirit of The Apparatus. Anyone utilising The Method is forced to willingly deny themselves many privileges — such as human control over the process or the right to personally be tributed as the creator of the final recorded work — and subject themselves to the position of being a tool of The Apparatus."

    From Finnish artist Erikoismies:

    ERIKOISDANCE 7
"Stereo Balance in The Phythm Part" - 7 Recordings by Non-baryonic form

    (Release date January 1, 2008)

The 7th installment in the Erikoisdance CD(r) series is a collection of recordings by Non-baryonic Form. Tracks cover a wide range of compositional styles and are connected more thru the creative technological approach or production philosophy than any aspiration toward some existing genre or urge to create anything that could be seen as a logically advancing selection of songs or well-balanced album-like entity.

File under - electronics, techno, electro, post-Irdial freeform house, experimental, ambient, home recording, drum machine music, creative automation, outsider dance or any other appropriate genre definition, existing or new.

The only place in the physical world to buy the disc is, as usual, the Myymalä 2 gallery shop on Uudenmaankatu in Helsinki. Vladislav Delay @ The Wire

Berlin-based Finnish electronic artist Vladislav Delay (a.k.a. Sasu Ripatti a.k.a. Luomo a.k.a. Uusitalo) is featured on the cover story of February's issue of The Wire (#288), written by Philip Sherburne and titled "What makes today's Techno so different, so appealing?". The mag also features a stream of the track 'Lumi' from Vladislav Delay's latest album, Whistleblower.

    ---

As a bonus, I noticed The Wire Web archive includes an unedited transcript of the interview of Mad Mike Banks, the enigmatic frontman of Detroit's Underground Resistance label. (UR had a cover feature in the magazine's November 2007 issue.)

    manSEDANse 2007: 4-7 October '07, Tampere

    manSEDANse 2007
A festival of electronic music & arts
    Tampere, Finland
    4-7 October 2007
    @ Telakka & Klubi

    manSEDANse @ MySpace

    From press release:

"manSEDANse convenes electronic communities to Tampere

manSEDANse festival takes place in October with themes of electronic music, art and community-driven content.

The most interesting and intriguing movers and shakers in electronic music are convened to Tampere in the first week of October 2007 by manSEDANse festival. manSEDANse, flying high on full throttle for the second time now, will be presenting the cream of electronic music to brighten the dark Nordic nights with very exciting line-ups. The festival programme will also feature workshops, film screenings and a seminar.

manSEDANse's programme will certainly satisfy many patrons of electronic music and culture. At this point we will give you but a hint: The headliners on Saturday night all hail from Manchester."

    About:

"manSEDANse is organised by MadAssRevir ry, a non-profit organization based in Tampere. The mission of MARry is to promote electronic music and culture in Finland.

The roots of manSEDANse festival date back to year 2000 when an underground rave by the name SEDAN 2000 was held at a Tamperean penthouse. After the enthusiastic welcome the underground penthouse turned into a popular club venue and SEDAN 2001 knocked the socks off Tampere clubbers with its cutting edge artists and GIGANTIC visual treats. Simply undescribable.

A series of recurring clubs, such as Comet, Slavic Walkmen, Underground Disco and the New Year Mash-up raves were organised at Klubi between 2002-2005.

The very first manSEDANse festival was organised in 2005. The festival teamed up the original SEDAN line-up with a merry bunch from around Europe: Subjex, Sickboy, Schizoide, Regina, Verde and Pylon among many others. It introduced Tampere to something that was lacking in the Finnish cultural climate: a full-fledged four-day festival of electronic music.

In 2006 MARry was raving to retro tunes with the ultimate glance to the past party, Shake That Acid! manSEDANse also provided the official festival dj's to the Tampere International Film Festival 2007. That was fun!

That's the history. manSEDANse 2007 will be the biggest, boldest and meanest festival in Finland ever. Simply undescribable. Yet again."

    A1. Mono Junk: Ai Jaa
A2. New York City Survivors: Superstar
    B1. Detroit Diesel: Fu-Dimension
    B2. Kim Rapatti: Fantasy

(Listen to some tracks at http://www.myspace.com/monojunk.)

    Press release notes:

"Finnish madmen are back with the cult Dum Records label. - All techno is so shit these days that we have to show again what it's all about. Experimenting with the sounds and creating something new and interesting, say boys from up north.

Mono Junk's AI JAA is outstanding track full of dark energy which makes junkheads dance their brains out. Or should. If not, ask the doctor prescribe some more pills. For the real rave hell 2007! A2. track SUPERSTAR, definitely a hardcore industrial techno masterdisaster by New York City Survivors. Their craziest track ever!

On the B-side Dum decided to offer their classic acid gem FU-DIMENSION for the hungry kids. Previously released in 1993 and has been sought after since because the small amount pressed in the golden years. The last track continues Kim Rapatti's 'sing a song career'. One of the Legowelt's all time top ten track, Time After Time, last year released, get great follow-up with fantasy.

    Suomiteknohistofriikki by Mono Junk

Mono Junk a.k.a. Kimmo "Kim" Rapatti (or was it Kim "Kimmo" Rapatti?) of Dum Records has written for the latest Basso magazine (3/2007) -- in his inimitable style -- a subjective account on the formative years 1990-99 of Finnish techno music scene.

For those into decoding the cryptic, wordplay-laden style of Mika Waltari-worshipping Mr. Rapatti, a chockful of innuendo and gossip is offered on the adventures, mishaps and exploits of your favourite Finnish electronic musicians of these "golden years". Alongside his own "Totuus Top 10" ("The Truth Top 10") Kim/mo also asked from yours truly a Top 5 list of favourites which you can see above.

(Obviously similar lists were requested by Mono Junk from other Finnish electronic luminaries, too, but typically, no one else bothered to send them than your humble narrator -- can we detect a pattern here...?)

    ***

    Addition 26 June 2006:

And now Mono Junk sent me his own comments to this:

"Actually it's not my own Top Ten, like I have explained before the chart... I got about 15 Top 5 charts and only a few did't answer. So it's 'truth' ;) Top Ten (except Mighty Rubber Boots record is joke, magazine changed zero to ten by mistake. Pure gabba shit :) If it would be mine own top ten there would be only my own tracks, heh ;) Just only the separate Top 5 is pHinn's. By the way in the story there are hidden 5 Mika Vainio/Pan sonic track titles, easy to find or not, otherwise also tricky story if don't understand anything about 90's techno history or don't know any persons... Horo Julkunen, who the hell is he..."

[videos] Karri O.: 'To Breathe Air'

Karri O.: 'To Breathe Air' (2007)

Karri O. (b. 1974) is a minimal techno/house musician from Helsinki, formerly of Tampere: here he used to run his own record shop Mono Records, DJ and also organise parties, which I often attended too (I remember a couple of those with not too many people present, so I'm glad he has found a better success later on). This is his new video. From the official Karri O. biography:

"Karri Ojanen, who hails from Helsinki, Finland, started his career as an electronic musician and deejay in 1992, after first producing music with a friend of his on a pair of Commodore Amigas. Since then he has performed throughout North America, Japan and Europe, in cities including Detroit, Berlin, Toronto, Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris, Budapest, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg."

"Over the past decade his preoccupation with electronic music has led him in many directions, including event promotion and vinyl vending. Nowadays Karri runs a small audiovisual record label, Abflug, and concentrates on producing his own music."

"Karri's sound is a mix of deep techno and microhouse. The results of Karri's recent producing efforts can be heard on a 12" called "The Hits" recently released on the Berlin-based label Resopal and on a new 12" called "Mysore", which has just come out on the Cologne-based imprint Plong! More releases are due to come out this fall/winter on the Berlin-based Lebensfreude Records, for instance."
