Eclectro Lounge Has Been Shelved

[large image]

Eclectro Lounge of Thursday 20 October 2005 was the last one. It became increasingly frustrating to maintain a club, spend a lot of time and energy to the promotion and advertising when fewer and fewer people bothered to come in. Yes, it's the same whine as usual: in a small country like Finland and a town size of Tampere (pop. 250,000 or something like that) it's hard to keep an ongoing club dedicated to underground music. (Plus there are some other reasons I don't want to go public with.) Anyway, big thanks to Abbas of Apadana that he gave a chance to our club. And of course to all guest DJs who played there: Alexcore, Art Barf-Uncle, Autobass, Lasso800, Matias, Sakke, Sire, Slave To The Beat, Toiminto a.k.a. Joe Nasty and Tuhmatassu.

Now we probably concentrate with Mike Not on the music of Kompleksi, and I hope to have more DJ gigs also in the future for other clubs. The name and concept of Eclectro Lounge are not totally buried, however, but I don't know how probable it would be to continue the club in some other venue.

And this as a comment to a conversation just held with one person (who has nothing to do with Eclectro Lounge): no, I don't think I'm really a cynical bastard. More likely, I am too naïve, don't consider things thoroughly to the end when I should, and sometimes even trust people too much for my own good when I really shouldn't.

Eclectro Lounge #20

[click for larger image -- this is Dorothy Stratten from the 1980 low-budget sci-fi flick Galaxina: Stratten was an ill-fated Playboy Playmate of the Year who was murdered by her husband.]

I haven't written about the latest Eclectro Lounge nights, the reason being simple: there is not much to say which would be of great interest or not merely repetition of what has been said about our earlier "parties". However, here are two single and separate incidents about the previous nights or their preparations, as a sort of an uncoherent stream-of-consciousness reminiscences:

First incident: I am at the public billboard of Koskipuisto sticking up ads for one of the nights of ours when this female employee of the City of Tampere's Park Department (as I guess), in T-shirt and glaring orange trousers of overalls, arrives to me and tells me that: "Ihan vaan vihjeenä..." ("just as a tip") that they are are going to photograph and report to the police all the event posters that are found at the lampposts and other unsuitable places (that is, other than public billboards). Annoyed by being treated as a potential criminal like this, I duly inform this young lady that I have never attached our posters anywhere else but to the legitimate billboards, and they'd better search for people doing misdemeanours such as this somewhere else. I don't know if this young woman is a zombie or what, but she is as if she doesn't actually listen to a word I say. "Ihan vaan vihjeenä..." she keeps repeating like a record player stylus stuck in one place. After she's gone, I find the whole situation totally preposterous: I think the local police probably has enough work in their hands already and with real criminals, than having to chase for some event organisers who have stuck their posters to the places where they should not be. And don't the City employees actually have anything else to do than to snap photographs? Is this another example of the City (heh) of Tampere's famous "zero tolerance" policy? Small towns breed petty minds, it seems.

Second incident: I'm spinning records at Eclectro Lounge one night when this totally unknown blonde and bearded young guy comes to me. I listen flabbergasted as he tells me that he'd like to play some records now because they are "similar" to the stuff that we have spinned there. I tell him that it's not possible now (besides, we have agreed well beforehand about the nights when our guest DJs are supposed to play), but this guy just keeps insisting and whining. This makes me lose my temper and get me into my fascist "fucking-freaks-get-off-me" mode, and I tell him to go to a very hot and sulphurous place familiar from the world religions and mythologies. Gladly the freak (who has probably enjoyed some other intoxicants than alcohol) gets away before I have to recourse into physical violence. With certain general fuck-ups in my life lately, I'm already tense enough as it is and I don't need any more extra pushing. (Well, probably you are right if you say it's very hard for me to actually subscribe to the PLUR mindset, and I don't believe real love for people can be created by illicit chemicals, anyway. I Ain't No Lovechild.)

Well, about the Eclectro Lounge of Wednesday the 14th of September, 2005 AD, the "manSEDANse Warm-Up Night" when we had Sire of Grayframe and Lasso800 of Slavic Walkmen as guest DJs. First a writer for local Aamulehti paper's Valo weekend supplement was supposed to interview yours truly at Apadana club where our Eclectro Lounge nights take place, but he couldn't make it because of some clashing schedules. Then we heard that the next scheduled night of ours, 28 October, was already booked to someone else: the guy taking care of Apadana's booking had quit working for the club, of which I was not really aware and which was mainly why this mix-up had taken place. Gladly 29 October was still available for us, so we could book that night.

Finally, the rain and storm took their toll with our potential clients, so there was only a handful of people present and we had to call it quits already at midnight. And Mika was not exactly delighted when he heard that our food and drink policies had been changed from what we have been first promised (by a person other than Abbas himself, the Iranian manager of Apadana) when we started the Eclectro Lounge nights last February. So, all your normal snafus in one night. Well, Mr pHinn -- who still naively believes in the Finnish myth of sisu -- doesn't give up but gladly keeps hitting his thick skull to the brick wall. Yes, all this trés interesting, isn't it? Oh, how I love to whine.

Wham bam, thank you, ma'am! Kompleksi DJs Mike Not & pHinn play nu & old electro, IDM, techno, Detroit, new wave, disco, ambient, synthpop, funk, acid house, old skool hiphop, EBM, new beat, spacepop, retro...

Kompleksi-DJ:t Mike Not ja pHinn selvisivät täpärästi hengissä UMFista, jossa tamperelainen täystuhotiimi näytti Turun house-olmeille, kuinka Kårenin pubin tanssilattia räjäytettiin vanhalla ravella ja vuosikerta-EBM:llä. Tänä iltana jatkoa seuraa Apadanassa elektroindiegrooven merkeissä, sinne! Kalja on halpaa eikä maksa mitään sisään. Avaruus on edelleen paikka, robotit huokailevat kiimassa, r&b, bling bling eikä kiksu juhli läsnäolollaan -- oletko valmis kosmiseen tajuntaräjähdykseen?

Eclectro Lounge #17

This was a pretty ordinary Eclectro Lounge night (with all its technical frustrations, the worry about the lack of audience, etc.) The guest DJ Alexcore (a.k.a. Alex Regan of Slavic Walkmen posse) played a set of "covercore", twisted cover/plunderphonics/pirate mixes of tracks from Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Flying Lizards, etc.; the sort of stuff that V/VM Records is specialised in. It blew your mind (see the pic above). And Alex got my headphones back, that I already thought having lost forever -- they had been lying somewhere at Klubi -- the only bad thing was that I had already bought new Koss headphones, and thus wasted extra 59 euros of my thin montly budget.

Eclectro Lounge #16: A Search for a Missing Stylus

The beginning of this night was marked by bad luck. Someone had broken again the stylus of the other SL-1200. Since the truth, even at its best, is a flexible entity, we don't go as far as to speculate about the identity of the guilty member, who did not even have the decency to report of this misdeed to the Iranian management of Bar Apadana -- only state that it was certainly not us behind this act of corruption, cross my heart and hope to die, goddammit; additionally wishing the karmic fist will hit this mysterious delinquent back at some stage in the future. What ensued was a frantic search around the town for a replacement stylus. Mika had had a bad day earlier on, and I decided to embark on this quest before Mr. Not was going to arrange a mass murder at Apadana, or at least, redecorate the venue with a sledgehammer or some other instrument of demolishing nature.

During my walk I had good time to think, and I decided that it is obvious that there is nothing we can do to avoid chaos in this life but we can do our best to minimise its effects, whichever way we only can. Perhaps it's our reactions to chaos that differ. It's easy to become desensitised when enough bad luck continually befalls you. Personally, I've noticed that I either start to panic under stress situations, or then my mind starts to work in a cold and calculating way, like a machine. Is there a danger that one starts to gradually lose one's earlier sensitivity -- and as a consequence, even humanity -- the more one becomes faced with situations creating great emotional stress (for example loss, grief, personal failures in work and personal life, such as unrequited love, humiliation in social situations, shame)?

The stages of my trek were, to say the least, tragicomical (now when writing this, more comical, but in the time more of a tragic nature).

Since Mr. pHinn is probably the last Finn who does not yet own a mobile phone, he had to make another walk back home to make a call to Mr. Riku "Rufus" Järvinen of Voltti Records , and inquire if Mr. Järvinen could perhaps provide with the missing stylus. This usually kind and helpful gentleman of record retail sales regretted to inform me that unfortunately he could not be of assistance in this case, but suggested that perhaps Mr. Sami Koivikko, a local recording artist who he was visiting at the moment, might be able to help.

After another long and sweaty walk from my home at Näsilinnankatu to Yliopistonkatu where Mr. Koivikko's residence was located, I finally received a small crimson-coloured case containing that long-mourned-for stylus from the artist himself -- God bless his heart, or whatever metaphysical higher entity might or might not be out there. After I had finally sojourned back to the premises of the Iranian Kitchen Apadana, I found out to my bemusement, after the fashion of best theatre of absurd, that my personal quest had been ultimately futile. Namely, Mr. Sakari "Sakke" Karipuro had meanwhile managed to receive the missing stylus from a local DJ called Maurice...

After that, there is not much to report about this event. A million different things still crossed my mind, the less said about them, the better. In any case, DJ Art Barf-Uncle played another weirdo set consisting of cosmic Krautrock/avant/noise stuff combined with cheese disco and old FinnHits. You can see the tracklist of Mike Not and yours truly here. Sakke also took some photographs which you can see here.

Eclectro Lounge #15

Finally, the long-awaited(?) "Le Weekend Special" for Eclectro Lounge, though I have to say that as far as the amount of audience present, the night was "only" OK. Mike Not and me played this time "back-to-back", meaning we spinned only short sets in turn. The musical order of this night consisted of dub reggae, new wave funk, '88 UK house, a bit of old skool hiphop and synthpop, vintage acid house and more recent girlie-girlie electro pop. Some of it was horrifyingly "popular" (a couple of people even danced which has been unfortunately rare at our nights), so not much for underground electro headz this time either, but I didn't see too many of those people around, anyway. And oh yes, Lasso800 of local Slavic Walkmen posse played as a guest DJ a nice set of cool IDM.

Lately I've become more and more into "megamixes": they were a sort of remix medleys of different dance tracks mixed rapidly together -- and often featuring some funny sounds, speech samples and music from old movies and TV shows, etc. -- which were still in vogue in the 80s, but I haven't seen too many of those around lately. Mike Not has played at Eclectro Lounge some great old megamixes with such artists as New Order or Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and I too have some "Beatbox" remixes of Danish origin from the 80s (I played DJ Jack's '88 UK house mix myself). Does any of the current artists still do megamixes, and if so, where to find them? For example, I'd sure love to play a megamix of new electro myself!
